I have a cavalier bitch who is two and half, and a dog who is one year and two months, i was hoping to have a litter off her this year, i used a stud dog last season to mate her, (my dog was still a pup) with no luck. She has come into season on the 6th, bleed for two days but now appears to have stopped bleeding but my male licks her but doesn't try to mount her or even seem that attracted to her? is this normal? Is it because he has been brought up with her?? any thoughts on the matter would be great.
Thankyou
caroline

She may be having a split season, also as he's a 'maiden' dog he will show interest at any time, rather than when she is ready.
Well she bleed for two days, then stopped for three and the sweling went down too, now shes swollen right up and is bleeding again? i have read that when a bitch is ready to mate she will stop bleeding and the swelling will go down? I've read so many books and articles but she dosen't play by the rules LOL.

According to breed specialists here, your dog still isn't old enough to breed, as he won't have had all his tests yet. Your bitch is only
just old enough ...

Eh? I thought you could get the heart, eye and SM scans done from about 6 months?

The MRI scan can be done at 6 months but & it's a big but some dogs have symptoms & the MRI scan is not conclusive(like Milo's)
The Veterinary advice for hearts
& SHM is not to breed until both the dogs
& bitch are both over 2 1/2 & preferably 3 years of age

And ideally it should be known that all the grandparents are
5 or over and still clear. As far as MVD goes, it is generally believed (until the DNA test materialises) that it cannot be prevented, so the best you can do is to breed from lines where the dogs develop it as late in life as possible.
I didn't actually ask about tests but thanks all the same!

of course i do, though i know the theory about dog breeding, (read lots of books, and did it at college diploma animal care) its like a job i guess i do not have the expirence to back it up, thus why i asked what i did. I saw alot of litters before purchasing the two dogs i have, and research the breed and the pedigrees all parents have had the relevent tests and i went through the breed society to find my dogs Not the newspaper or petshop window! my jessie through me off a bit because the seasons she has had before have all been the same and this time she stopped bleeding and it confused me but i'm going to let nature take its course and not dwell on it i love my dogs and if no puppies come of it at the end of the day i will still love them as much as before i decided to try for a litter.
