Hi everyone, I have a lot more faith in this site then I do asking my vet so I would appreciate anyone's help & guidance......... I have a litter of 8 puppies now 8 days old, but last night in the whelping box it literally looked like there had been a war zone of very runny poo, I did ring the vet and they have given me pro-kolin to give to the pups every 8 hours but he said he thinks they have parvo????? I am now sick with worry & so upset. Although pups poo is now getting harder (not solid though), and they are all suckling fine, no complaints there.
Mum is also ok although last night she did vomit a little bit just the once, although she had literally just cleaned up large amounts of poo and gargled loads of water, and wasn't sick again, she too is eating fine but I also wondered if the discharge should still be ongoing?
Any help or advice would be appreciated, thanks everyone.

Parvo has a very distinctive smell. I can't explain to you what it smells like, but you'd know if you'd smelled it and you'd never forget it. Also given the incubation period and the mum passing on immunity to the pups, I'd think it was highly unlikely in such young pups.
Puppies that age don't really have solid poo - it doesn't usually get solid until they've started being weaned. So don't worry at this stage as long as the puppies behaviour hasn't changed and mum is well in herself. May be an idea to weigh the pups every couple of days, just to check nobody is losing weight. Finish the course of kaolin as recommended by the vet, but if there is any deterioration in mum or pups, don't hesitate to call the vet as it could be something viral/bacterial that can be treated. Chances are everything will be fine, though.
Thank you for taking the time to reply to me, I am keeping a very close eye, and keeping my fingers crossed. No matter what it is I hate to think that any of them are ill at this early stage. They are all suckiling fine at the mo and mum has just eaten yet another meal so hopefully all will be well.

i have 3 week old puppies and i had the same problem it was hot here and the reason for it was dehydration puppies pick up little bugs here and there in those first few weaks they also get upset tummies very easily they get dehydrated easily as well unless they start showing other illnesses i wouldnt worry unless it get very bad and they are crying from it or there is blood
Like Phoebe has said, if it was parvo you'd be able to smell it......the smell is very distinctive.
Good luck :-)
parvo diarrhoea is usually watery with blood, they can be lethargic- lifeless- vomiting ALOT- those sorts of symptoms, they rapidly lose weight too, and yes you will smell it- i can describe it as a gutty smell- not nice at all- keep an eye out, but it doesnt sound as though ;)
Hi, pups have still got the runs turning colour getting very watery although last night poo looked great like toothpaste but then has got bad again today, a couple of pups have had a very very watery poo that looks illuminous green in colour- Hmmmm very nice, not one pup has passed any blood in their poo though (good sign), neither have any of them vomitted, they are all suckling fine, none are loosing weight just gaining, but it is still a worry though.
I have just got back from the vet, took a poo sample in. A couple of pups have been pooing or should I say spraying everyone with their poo, it is coming out like water, showering everyone in the process, then I am there at the back end catching the sample!!
Jokes aside I am worried, the vet went to take a look under his microscope but his bulb blew so he couldn't give me any kind of idea, so now it is just the waiting game and fingers crossed & making sure the pups are drinking enough from mum. I don't like it when anyone around me is not well.
I have everything crossed here Emmalou for you & your puppy's :-) Please keep us posted on what the vet says. xx
What a night!!!! Mum has now got the runs!! It is like cow pats everywhere, she is giving us no indication that she wants to go out just literally dropping them!! Although she still seems fine in herself, feeding the pups cleaning after them etc........????

how are things now? hope all is well.

my pups are the same at the moment some a runny then others are like toothpaste and its all got to do with how much they are eating the vet told me some of the pups are guts and will eat the majority of the food and then will go on to the other pups bowls and eat thiers as well the pups that dont get as much have normal toothpaste like stools and the ones that eat the most are kinda runny
Hi everyone, finally got the results from the vet today- sunday????? although they didn't ring me I had to ring them........but everything is a ok!!!!!! Negative for all tests including parvo!!!! I did have a gut feeling, due to the reading I had done on Parvo, I was expecting to see a down fall in the pups well being but they seemed fine so lively plus we are no longer having to put up our umbrellas when they poo!!!!
Have not even started christmas shopping yet, I have told the children the pups were their christmas presents (although we are not keeping any!!!!!)- what a cruel mum!!!!
Thanks again to everyone onbt his site- and I do hope you all have a fab christmas & New Year
Fantastic news :-) I'm so pleased to hear it was nothing serious.
