Hello Everyone, your help would be greatly appreciated ! I will tell you my problem !!
My puppy chosen by the stud dog owner (as payment for mating) his testicles have yet to drop ! the puppies are 6 weeks old. He has now decided he doesn't want the puppy, but can I pay him a fee instead, which amounts to the price of the pup (£500) which I think is a bit steep ? but as he would have been having the pup anyway seems fair enough ? Do i hang on to the pup in hope that they desend or sell him to pay the fee? what shall I do ?
Thanks

Suppose it depends on how hard the stud owner is pressing you, and to an extent on the breed (6 weeks is very young for testicles to drop in some breeds). But I'd use a stud contract that covers these eventualities next time.

These sort of arrangements are rarely satisfactory. It's much better to pay the stud fee up front and if the owner wants a puppy, then allow them to purchase the first choice after you.
As he is entitled to a puppy, then if you sell it you will be financially no worse off, and at least you will know where your puppy is going!

I know that now !! and will pay a stud fee next time, he has been a great help and I have managed to sell all the pups through him, and has offered lodgings for any puppies that needed to stay longer as new owners cannot pick up until 9 weeks. I am thankful for his help and don't begrudge paying the fee, but He intially thought this dog would have good prospects in the ring, and I am wondering whether it is worth hanging on to him ?

Chloe, sorry, didn't mean to sound pious about stud contracts :-(. If this was a deerhound, I'd have little hope of seeing testicles if they weren't there by 6 weeks, but other breeds are different, so talk to lots of people in the breed, and if they say there is a chance they will appear later, I'd hang on for a while at least.

In mho, I would hang onto the pup, if, apart from the testicles, all else looks very promising. I feel 6 weeks is very young to decide wether there is going to be a testicle problem. I am used to a giant breed, whose testicles are apparent almost from birth. When I got my bedlington, there was still nothing showing when I got him at nine weeks of age, and it was a good few weeks after that , that they emerged. I suppose it depends a bit on what breed the pup is, but I personally would play the "wait and see" game.

If this man is an experienced exhibitor, has kindly passed on puppy sales to you and has given you good advice all the way, then maybe it would be worth listening to him if he says the dog won't be good enough for the ring. None of us are going to know the lines like the owner of the stud dog! We always say that the pedigree is only a collection of names and is meaningless unless you actually KNOW the dogs themselves. I can tell you whether no testicles at 6 weeks matters in my lines, but HE is the one to listen to about his!
We all think that we know best when we breed our first litter. I did too! It's only with hindsight (and I'm going to get some for my New Years Resolution!) that I now throw my hands up in horror and can see that those with experience knew best! Of course they can sometimes be wrong ...........

just to let you know I have decided not to keep him. It will be to difficult having 2 entire dogs, especailly mother and son, and I am planning to have another litter, so I will take my own advise and be patient !!!
