Any experts out there?  do you know if you can calculate numbers in a range of cells, even if the cell contain text as well as numbers?

hope i made myself clear?  thanks in advance

Hmm could you not just create the calculation in the next box. I tried it and couldn't get it to work but maybe someone knows a way to get it to work. Now can I ask why you want to do that as I can't think why you would want to :-D :-D

I know this may sound strange but doing it for my son and his spreadsheet (from work) has some cells merged etc., and I did suggest to him to put text in one and numbers in another cell but he's admant he wants to do it this way for neatness and because I work in an IT college as a Facilitator he's convinced I can do anything!

I have a dummies guide here but can see it mentioning it.

I use Excel all the time and personally think for neatness they should be seperated and then you can straighten the text with the test positioner.  I think with Excel one of it's good features is you can use the boxes anyway you like but when printed off it looks like the text numbers etc are all together.  My collegue loves Word and hates Excel , I love Excel and hate Word.

Sorry I am not much more help to you and still not answered your question ;-)

You'd have to separate the text and the numbers, you could copy the cells with numbers to a hidden column then perform the calculations on the hidden column with the result going to a visible cell.  It's not possible if cells contain both text and numbers
