I have a Westie and I would like to know the best food for her

Hi,

The "best food" for a dog depends on who you talk to about it!  I assume you are asking about packaged complete foods, although that is not the only option.

I feed my two Cairns Naturediet, which is a moist food.  If you want to feed a dry complete food then the list is a lot longer, including James Well Beloved, Burns, Arden Grange and Nutro.  If you search this board you will find lots and lots of discussions about it.  Basically, stay away from anything which is artificially preserved, has ingredients are listed as "by products or derivatives", or is cut and coloured into funny shapes to please people (Frolic, for example).

What food are you feeding? is there a reason you want to change the dogs food? these type of answers can help determine the best advice. I personally would never feed a westies high protein complete diets.

I'm feeding my dog Eukanuba. I heard that there is some health issues with it.
I was hoping to see if there is anything better on the market and if it is true about Eukanuba.

As Eukanuba contains wheat, barley, maize and sorghum I would be looking at a food that had a more easily digestible source of carbs such as rice, which also did not have the possible gluten issues that wheat and maize have and also was not deficient in 3 essential amino acids like maize (corn).

Bearing in mind that Westies appear to be prone to skin problems I would probably also avoid foods containing Brewers Yeast and Linseed.

Linseed can make dogs itchy and also it needs to be converted by the body for its EFA to become available whereas Fish Body Oils do not.

Added salt is something I would avoid if I could bearing in mind it is there as a preservative and flavour enhancer, it also does not mention the quantity of salt either.

If I was looking at feeding a commercial dry food I would probably choose Burns (some varieties) or JWB (again some varities) or feed Naturediet in preference to either but of course this is wet but dogs love it, and it is the closest a commercial food gets to being the texture dogs would eat in the wild and contains only meat, rice, carrots and bonemeal

Not sure if that helps at all.
