I had Lady to the Vets today as i noticed that this last week her breath had started to smell.
The vet said she has an infection in her gums due to build up on her teeth, I clean them every week. But about a year and a half ago she had most off her teeth pulled out (all except 9) she had been a rescue and the people who had her before had not looked after her teeth, the vet told me that it would be kinder to pull all the bad ones out and leave her with what he described as the best teeth left (even her good teeth were not that good for her age)
The vet has quoted me £135 just to clean her teeth, I think this seems expensive considering that when he pulled her teeth out year and a half ago it only cost £75, I know everything is effected by inflation, but £135, especially when they only need to clean 9 teeth, and if they need to pull any out this could go up to £200. I am just wondering if anyone has had this kind of treatment recently and if you dont mind me asking how much were you charged. She has a fortnights course of antirobe, to get rid of the infection before any dental work is done.
Do you think it might be worth my while ringing other vets to see what they quote me. If I have to pay £135 I will at the end of the day its her health, but it seems a bit steep to me.
Thank you for your replies in advance.

Hi- there im a vet nurse and do a couple of dentals per week, we charge around £70 for medium dog- of course charge more if then the dog needs medication ie-pain relief- an extra £10 ish. But in your case if your dog doesnt have many you should ask your vet to reassess the price based on that!
And yes do ring around- but if you go to new vets- you'll have to register and probably pay an extra consult fee as your dog wouldnt have been seen be the vet before. ;)
Things are standard charged are the sedation- £30/£40 ish, then cost of dental on top- this should be discounted as dog doesnt have many teeth.
hope ive helped :)

Thank you for replying.
Lady is a greyhound, she is about 24kgs, so she might be classed as a large dog I am not sure though, this might have put the price up a bit??
The vet wants to put her under while she does the work, but I was talking to my other half tonight, does a dog have to be put under for all dental work or could I ask for sedation.
After she has had her teeth cleaned is there anything I can do to stop tartar building up again? I brush what teeth she has once a week, with proper dog toothbrush (rubber one goes on end of your finger) and dog toothpaste.
One more thing, she hates Vets she gets herself in a right state, is there anything I can do to make this less stressful for her. Thankyou again.
