Topic Dog Boards / Health / Any sufferers of EPI or SIBO out there??
- By Trudi [gb] Date 05.12.05 19:54 UTC
Hi,  I am happily owned by my male german sheppard called Sabre

3 days ago he was diagnosed with Exocrine Pancreatric Insuffiency and SIBO (small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth!!, As it is quite rare my vet knows very little about it...  I researched it on the internet and found a support listing, however most people registered on it are in America, although they have been a great support, it would be nice to chat to fellow sufferers in the UK.

So if any of us few are out there, please give me a shout.

Thanks

http://www.dogaware.com

This link maybe of assistance to you and will give you lots of help re dietary support.

I think you will find that both EPI and SIBO are far from rare, particularly in GSDs

Sometimes the family vet knows the minimum and the disease may even  go undiagnosed, misdiagnosed or untreated for long periods. EPI, although it seems to be diagnosed in an evergrowing number of the canine population, isn't a disease that's commonly talked about on other lists, and often owners of EPI dogs feel they are on their own, with little or no help. There is a very good one which I know Trudi is on, but its nice to know there are others here that can share your problems without having to wait for the time zone to catch up. (the other site is american based with literally thousands of owners with EPI pets)
There are lots of problems that I had/have with Maddie, and a lot of people on here have helped one way or another like with diet etc. There are a lot of nice people willing to help or just listen.

Hi Trudi,

Welcome to the forum :)  I'm sorry it's somewhere you've needed to search for in worrying circumstances but I'm so glad you've already got a dedicated list to exchange info and queries.  I've been a member of a few lists (not for EPI) and know that often the largest membership is from the US and although at the end of the day we all  can face the same problems, the solutions, medications and diets available are not always of help to those in the UK.

I regularly meet with two local Westies who have EPI and have followed their progress for some time (in both instances it was as a result of my constant nagging that their owners eventually requested specialist referral ;) )    Thankfully with patience, perseverance and the all essential enzyme powder they are both doing really well and the difference in them is remarkable.

Best wishes to you and your lad - try and keep your spirits up, easier said than done of course.
Good luck,  Teri :)

Hi Teri,

Thanks for the warm welcome.

I do hope you havent been a member of such lists through having a poorly dog.  If so what is the problem if you dont mind me asking?

:-) I will try to keep my spirits up thanks, just want my boy back on his feet and totally well again.  DOnt know what I would do without him!!

All the best
