Topic Dog Boards / Health / A cold?

hi- my dog is very snuffly- my main concern- is it kennel cough?! she's vaccinated but could have came into contact with unvaccinated dogs when she wasnt fully protected.
She just sounds very snotty, she hasnt been coughing though- just a couple of times a day she sounds as though she's choking- only for a second or so.
Do dogs get colds? Or has she just got an infection? or worse kennel cough?

Could be kennel cough, it sometimes starts of with the dog sneezing. Ido is just getting over his first bout of KC and Kayla had it last Christmas, at its worst she couldn't move without having a coughing 'fit', the best way to describe the cough is that it sounds like the dog is trying to clear something from its throat, dry and hacking, often people think thats what it is. Sometimes they bring up small amounts of white 'foam' with the cough.
Our dogs are vaccinated but unless you say your dog is going into kennels, or ask for the KC jab, they will not offer, or give the KC(or Infectious Canine Bronchitis) vaccine. You'd know if they'd had it as it usually given intra-nasally and dogs hate it!  Ours have picked it up from shows but a dog could pick it up anywhere that dogs congregate, such parks, training etc
The best thing is to check with the vet, if you are worried at all, say you think its kennel cough and leave the dog in the car with someone until the vet calls you in, just to reduce the risk of it passing on. Our vets give antibiotics just to prevent it turning into pnemonia and Benylin is good at keeping the cough (sort of) at bay, then just rest, we kept them in for 14 days after the last cough, exercise tends to exaserbate it and it helps to minimise the possible spread to other dogs.
Hope this helps
Emily :)

No vaccination is 100% necessarily and particularly with KC, it only tackles certain strains of bordatella etc.

Just because a dog is vaccinated does NOT mean that it cannot or will not contract a disease.
