Is it just bad luck or should i worm my dog more often? I was due to worm him this week as it is 3 months (to the day) since I last wormed him, but yesterday his poo was infested, I have now treeted him but  I am now also worried about the family should I worm them too?

Hi JessMonty - what wormer are you using?

Some wormers are rubbish and don't kill all kinds of worm - especially the kinds you buy in pet shops just don't work.

The "best" wormer, which kills the widest range of worms, is Drontal +.  You can get this either from your vet or online from here:

If you haven't been using Drontal +, then you should use it!

Hi JessMonty,

If using Drontal+ you really shouldn't have any problems unless giving the wrong dosage for weight or your puppy has one of the few types of worms not covered by the product.  In this instance if the worm burden looked that bad I'd be taking pup and faecal sample to the vet.

Regards, Teri

Do you have a cat and is that wormed regularly too? Also, does your dog eat poo of any sort (aren't they just lovely? LOL) when he's out? Either of these can lead to a reinfestation.

I think a lot of people are under the misapprehension that wormers have a "lasting" effect.  They only expel worms that are already in the body.

Your dog may be reinfected the day after..........

What type of worm did your dog have?

What are his eating habits?

I would discuss this with your vet

i worm my dogs monthly with drontal mainly because of the enviroment we live in. They catch and eat rabbits on a daily basis .... and yes they are fed twice a day ... but i found when i wormed on a 3 mth basis they always seemed to be excreting worms.Since worming them monthly it has resolved the problem. Im fortunate that my daughter is a microbiologist and she regulary screens them for worms and thankfully they are worm free.
