Hi guys,

A lot of people ask a lot of questions about breeds.

My other half has a book called Encyclopaedia of Dogs and its fantastic. It's american but is still great.

Categorises all dogs by group and then breed, lots of colour photos of all breeds and for each breed it states:

Country of origin
Aptitiude (e.g. companion dog, watch dog, etc)
Size (males and females)
Coat
Care Required
Character
Training
Social Behaviour
Exercise Requirements
and Special Remarks

After reading this book I decided to look more into Shar Pei (which I now own) and bought more books on the breed and found the information in all the other books matched the encyclopaedias, so its very accurate.

If hadn't been for this book I'd never have known about Shar Pei, so for anyone looking into getting a dog, I'd definately give this book a go because it'll introduce you to the whole range of breeds that exist and give you some good information on the breeds.

It's author is ESTHER J.J. VERHOEF-VERHALLEN not too sure if they sell it anymore, but the ISBN is 190109409-X

Good luck peeps,

Paul

Personally go for the KC illistrated breed standard.  This way you know all the reg breeds in the UK.  It's that book that helped us choose the red and whites :)  A breed I will never part with, untill one of them misbehaves!!! :D

I agree.  And you can see what they should look like, instead of what you see in the park! :)

and it's the best english version.  I find american books "wrong" to what the dogs are in england! :)  Take the setters for example...much heavier coated over there then here and cockers are "american cockers and English cockers are "cockers".  Just confuses me!!!!!! :D  But that's me personally.  If when searching for our first breed in an american book we would never have seen the red and whites!

However all the above is MPO! :)
