Im not sure if this has been asked before but i have a dilema. What is the best shampoo to use on a dog?I have two big smelly GSDs and no matter which shampoo i use they always seem to pong.It does make them a bit anti-social.They both have lovely shiny coats that are in great condition but oh my God,that smell. :)
Any advice would be greatly apreciated.Thanks.
I use Johnson's baby shampoo....and a separate conditioner :-)
I have a GSD 5 month old and she gets smelly occasionally as a result of jumping into stagnent ponds, scrabbling about in any dirt she possibly can, you know, the usual. I was wondering what i should use to shampoo her after grooming wasn't getting rid of the pong and I used shampoo from where I work, Lush. I know some people will get quite offended perhaps that i don't use something specifically tailored for dogs, but with the shampoos from Lush I know exactly what is in them as they produce a full, complete ingredients list. I use either the two-in-one Godiva on her, which moisturisers as well as cleans, or a coconut shampoo from them called Trichomania, which also moisturises. They are solid too so there is no scrabbling for bottles with wet hands, or applying too much and then having to spend a half our rinsing down a very disgruntled looking dog in the bath! I also know of a lady who uses a violet shampoo we do called Daddyo on her white shepherd, which really makes the coat very shiny and discourages yellowing, and we have a regular lady who comes in and uses our Blond shampoo (with chaomomile and marigold) on her retrievers that she shows!
Our two seem to get themselves into the most awkward situations where smells are concerned. They love rolling in and on smelly things. If we take them to the woods they always seem to find the biggest pile of fox poo to roll in,at the beach theres a wonderful assortment of dead fish and other washed up nasties, and the moors holds the exsightment of sheep poo and all other kinds of poo.!!!!!!! They are really gross when it comes down to it.Wonder why they do it? :)
NannyOgg- Gosh you spoil your dogs! I use blond shampoo and the jungle conditioner, but no way could i bring myself to use it on my dog, but then again i bet you get loads of freebies- lucky thing :(
I can imagine people going overboard and getting the Glitterbug out on their pooch! haha...

Rub bicarbonate of soda powder into their coats leave it for a few mins and brush out it gets rid of smelly odours.
Wow,thats a great idea.I do that on the areas of carpet that they sleep but never thought about using it on them.Thanks. :)

I thought dogs had a different PH balance to humans and that was why you should use shampoo for dogs. Mind you, when she rolled in something disgusting everything in bathroom was used from Pantene to fragrant shower gel :D
They do have different skin to us yes, but I know that I can be 100% certain of what went in to the products I use from Lush because I know the company ethics, and the percentage of oils used etc, and I think it is likely to be a lot nicer for my dog than some dog shampoos that have a warning that you should only handle with gloves! I know plenty of people who use the products on their animals.
I am not sure if anyone has used glitterbugs on their dogs though... but there is always one I guess. We did have a man who said he saved the last slivers of soap for washing his ferret, but I didn;t know if he was pulling my leg or not...!
I do use a medicated type of dog shampoo as Guiness gets "hot spots".Dont know if thats the technical term for it or not?He also has a flea allergy and has to have random injections if the flea treatment hasnt worked too well, which sometimes happens.Or if there is a particular bad year for fleas.I should of stated that earlier.DOUHHHHHH,didnt think to mention it.I would surmise that he has sensitive skin, not that the vet has actually said that, its an assumption.Even using the medicated stuff he still stinks like high heaven. :) :)

I rarely wash my dog but if she has rolled in something really nasty she goes under outside tap with some washing up liquid or tea tree shampoo which she hates. If she is smelling I wipe her over with a wet zilo smellkiller that I got from QVC. They are like the metal bars that you wipe on your hands to get rid of the smell of garlic and fish etc when you've been cooking and they work a treat on dogs too.

Hi Guiness,
On rare occasions I bath our dogs (long coats) I use Johnstones baby shampoo as someone else mentioned - however it's VERY rare ;) If it's mainly a "doggy smell" that's the problem, Try this
LINKScroll down to third / fourth last on page - product is Quick Clean Shampoo which is self-rinsing :) Dilute with water, spray onto dry coat, lather up slightly with hands and towel off excess. Brush through while still damp(ish) and it leaves the coat clean, bright and smelling great. Ideal if you don't actually need to
wash off anything nasty. There are a few other makes on the go too and they represent good value for money because a small bottle last ages as it's about 1 part product to 7 or 10 parts water :)
