I used a large cardboard box, which you can discard and replace at any time.  As long as you line it with plenty of newspaper.

My bitch has whelped twice and had no problems at all.

Also, it can save you some money.

I came across this website where you can buy disposable ones and thought it a good idea.  http://www.newdog.co.uk/

I just use a large cage and cover it over.  You have to be careful of course because it depends upon how big the pups are as to whether a cage is suitable.

I have used disposable ones in the past, good idea, waterproof base and not expensive

I make my own, using white faced chipboard (from B&Q) I don't like the cardboard ones, as I like to have easy clean surfaces which I cant whipe down with antibacterial spray at least twice a day, and have a way of fastening the vet bed down so the bitch can dig as much as she wants, but the vetbed stays secure and flat.  It also gives me somewhere to anchor the heatlamp too.  My latest one has castors on the bottom so it can be wheeled if necessary.  Very easy to make, and dismantle to store flat between uses.

Gwen - what do you use to keep the vetbed "dig proof"?
- By gwen [gb] Date 12.12.05 18:55 UTC
Hi Fillis,  its the way I desingend the boxes, I make the base section slightly larger than the outside dimension of the upright sections, I drill 4 holes in the corners of the base, and put largeish nuts, fixed with bolts,  so the threded end sticks up.  Then fix L brackets to the sidee, to line up wiht the nuts.  Place Vet bed ontop of base, cut hole to line up wiht nuts, and slide the top setion on, then use wing nuts to tighten L brackets up on to the nuts,  the vet bed is held tight. It takes an extra minute or two each time you change the vet bed, but I think it is worth it.  No chance of the vet bed getting scrunched up and the pups getting lost underneath.

Brilliant...thanks. I have bought some "non ruck" vet bed, but it is very expensive, and I like to get new each time, so next time (if there is one) I will get OH to make a new base for the box and do it your way - as for the extra time, it sounds quicker than sliding the plastic into the ones I have bought.

Thats great Fillis.  I have been using this style whelping box for 10 years now - am on to my 3rd version, making minor imporvements each time!  I find knowing that the bedding is fixed takes away one of the many worries of whleping.

my hubby has made yelping box out of ply wood what do you suggest we use to seal it wax or varnish
- By Goldmali Date 12.12.05 16:52 UTC
I have hubby make mine, also from wood, cheap as chips <grin>, a quarter or less of what the cardboard ones cost, and we burn it after use.
