My lad yesterday pulled one of his front claws out, blood everywhere, house resembled the chain saw massacre, once I had finally got it to stop.
Once I had done, then off to vets for a check, now have a dog feeling VERY sorry for himself, and have to leave banadage on for a day or so,.
Now I am sure some of you out there has had this happen to their dog, so how long did you leave your bandage etc on for, (he is a goldie) so missing his walks too..
Bless him :( hope his better soon and that his not in too much pain, poor fella! How did he manage that?

Depends on the bandage really - some just come off by themselves :D

Ooh, poor chap! :( My boy got a nail infection and after ABs didn't help the vet took him in and cut off the entire nail at the nailbed to try to flush out (with bleeding) any infection. Harry had to have the bandage changed every couple of days for nearly a week. The problem was keeping the bandage dry, because if it gets soggy then a new infection can easily start (think of 'trench foot'), so have a good supply of plastic bags to put over it when you take him out for lead walks.

I had this happen with one of mine. After a few days I took him out on the lead, but with the bandage still on. The best cover I have had to keep it dry was one the vet gave me (for something else), a used drip plastic bag, put some holes in the top and thread a run of bandage through it. It was so strong and lasted for ages.
It is amazing how quickly the nail grows back, it grew back horizontally. striped black and white.

Hi Hairydog,
were going through the same thing at the moment only my girl has had to have her nail removed because of damage .
Its been 10 days and the bandage is still on it has been changed 4 times.... because it hasnt quite healed up and there is still a little infection there.
She is on antibiotics, the bandage is on to keep it from getting any dirt in that would make the infection worse.
My girl is walking on the foot ..has been from day one actually even jumping around and playing .
we have dog boots which I am using to stop the bandage from getting wet which wouldnt help with the healing process .
Try a plastic bag with a childs sock over it to keep it in place then the water cant get through to the bandage.

Oh dear :( bless him... My Summer ripped her nail from the bed only a couple of months ago, Vet removed what was left with pliers and bandaged....bandage stayed on long enough for us to get home :) Dogs are not designed to wear bandages, no matter how intricately they are wrapped round the body... I left her bandage off after 3 pathetic attempts to replace. for her walks I put on one of my thick wooly boot socks and covered with a condom (bought specifically for this purpose)

LOL at kayc ;)
must admit the bandages have stayed on and she hasnt attempted to remove it ....expertly put on by the vet I must admit it took
vet long enough to remove to change!!!!!!

Thanks folks, he is feeling very sorry for himself at the mo, dosent like to walk on it at all, to vets this aft, as I cant change the dressing as he wont let me and dont want to do any damage at this early stage.
Thanks for all the suggestions too, will look for a sock and plastic bag now,(what will it do for his street cred ! )
Still dont know how he did it, just playing ball, he came back to me follwed by a trail of blood...

Its hard with a bandage on a dog - pop a carrier bag over it when he goes out for the loo :-)

Our Great Dane did this twice. Never worked out how though. Couldn't believe the amount of blood that comes out of such a small wound. He had foot bandaged by vet - changed every 2 days for 10 days each time. Never tried to remove bandage - the top layer was a different colour each time it was changed - the sticky bandages used on horses. We also used a drip bag with holes in the top and bandaged it on his foot each time he wanted to go out. He limped loads with bandage on - but only cos he got loads of sympathy!! His nails grew back fine both times.
Mine ripped his claw a few weeks ago. It didnt come clean off but after bumping it it split all the way round and I had to chop it off. There was a tiny baby nail underneath thankfully. I just kept it clean and dry and though it was sore for a week or so it will heal.
It must be the time for claws to go wrong ...
Our girl had one of her front claws ripped a few years ago around this time - vet removed it and it grew back thankfully. I can't remember any bandaging probems then, but she is a very patient girl for that.
Only yesterday our boy started limping and it turns out that he split one of his back claws - did you chop the claw off yourself Caroline?
He is a strong lad and I don't fancy upsetting or hurting him so much that he will forget himself (if you know what I mean)
I wonder if this is a case of just keeping the nail clean or if he needs a trip to the vets ... I cannot remember what I did when I split on of my nails ...
Anyone with any suggestions? Sorry for ambushing this "claw" thread ...

Hi Kathryn
Just seen this and realised in was Paddy :(
Poor boy :(
How did the vets visit go ?
Lucy
xx
I had a dog that did this years ago. The nail never did grow back in :(
I've had other dogs that have done it and I've had no problems with bandages - they didn't stay on long enough

The nails healed normally, though the dog didn't like the saline wash every time it came back inside ;)
Yes this is poor Paddy feeling very sorry for himself, vet took bandage off as she said to let air get to it, and some pain killers, he seems a little brighter to-day but goes for the sympthy vote every time, mind you walking round with a plastic bag on his foot when out for a walk does not do much for his street cred...!
I know this is a long time after you posted this message.... but....
Had this happen a couple of years back. Texas chain saw masacre, yes, but there is a limited amount of bleeding and it dries up. One the bleeding has stopped try and clean the wound (salt water if poss) if the dog allows you near. Keep it clean and dry and it will heal over and a new nail should grow through.
Try bandaging for walkies but letting the air near it is best for healing. Bandage, plus sock held on with elastic band, or a sock which has been cut round the top to make a tie. Then cover with small bag and tie it or use elastic band round the leg if weather is wet.
If you find it hard to bathe it, use a saline spray to clean which you can buy in Boots (the stuff they sell for contact lenses) and then smother in Sudocrem. Yes human stuff does work on dogs! Sudocrem works wonders! Cover with bandage so dog doesn't lick!
Any signs of pussiness, or bad inflammation, consult the vet immediately so it doesn't get infection. If you keep it clean, an infection isn't likely

Sorry but dont agree with putting anything like sudocrem on it
we were advised by our vet to bathe with hibiscrub then pat dry and leave for the air to get at it
this was after the bandage was removed.
The injury healed upvery quickly and nail is thankfully re growing.
Roni

Hibiscrub is wonderful stuff for human and canine infection/wounds :)
I believe that they also use it to scrub up with in hospitals before operations.
I was told by a Vet many years ago that if you put a thick aqueous cream onto wounds then you are running the risk of sealing any possible infection in.
