For a week or so Sheena an Akita bitch of 8 years as been off her food. Now over the last days although she is eating very little everything she does eat she is bringing back.
She was spayed about 6 weeks ago and recovered from this great. She had a phantom about 2 months ago.
She seems down although she isnt lathargic.
She is going to vets later today but just wondered if any of you had any ideas to what this could be.
Thank you.

The fact that she is lively enough suggests it is not too serious.  The first day she was like this I would have starved her for 24 hours.  Often giving the digestion time to rest is enough to restore it but as a few days have gone on you are wise to get her checked out.
- By sharonb [gb] Date 28.11.05 14:21 UTC
We took Sheena to the vets Friday. He gave her some injections and gave us tablets to give her. Telling us to starve her for the whole day.
The next day we had to go back. She seemed much happier and the vet said her stomache felt better. We were told to just give her chicken about 1 handfull twice that day if she kept it down to increae to 3 times the following day yesterday.
We did that and all was fine untill yesterday evening she was sick again.
Also this morning when we got up we found shed been sick during the night.
So far today I have only given her water. Going to try starving her for the day and continue with small meals of chicken again tomorow.
She is down and quiet and Iam worried. Is it advisable to wait and see how she goes tomorow before we take her back to the vets.
As anybody any idea what could be the problem.
Thanks for any help.

Aww Sharon......Poor Sheena, i'll keep everything crossed here for you and Sheena.

I'd take her back to the vets a.s.a.p....may be she has a tummy bug.

Keep us posted. xx
- By sharonb [gb] Date 28.11.05 15:22 UTC
My husband as already made arrangments for her to go back to vets today. I feel it may be worse than a virus. Ive searched the internet trying to find out what it might be and found nothing.
Hoping someone here will come along with something.

Hi Sharon,

I'm sorry to read about your girl :(  There are a number of avenues which your vet should explore and his first port of call should be to have bloods done - a full panel including TLI test for EPI and ACTH stim test for Addison's (neither are always done routinely, the second requires the dog be kept at the vet's for a couple of hours).  Are her bowel motions normal?

Teri
- By spanishwaterdog [gb] Date 28.11.05 15:46 UTC
Hi Sharon

Can I ask how the sick looks?  Is it in a clear bag when it comes out or is she just bringing up her food?

I only ask this as we had a Rough Collie who unfortunately passed away with oesophageal cancer at the age of 9.  He went downhill in just a week.

I hope of course that it's nothing as serious as this but if the being sick continues then I think a scan of some kind will be needed.

Hope it is nothing serious and thinking of you at this time.

Take care.

Diane
- By sharonb [gb] Date 28.11.05 16:10 UTC
Her motions are normal but shes not been doing much as what food she is having very little is getting down. Her sick is just what shes eaten its very watery as she is drinking.
THanks about the mention of addisons some of symptoms do apply. The vet did say he would do blood tests. Our appointment is in 1 hours time so hopefully I will know more then,
- By Teri Date 28.11.05 16:23 UTC
As Diane suggested it might be worth asking for a scan to be done too or an x-ray :)  These will give you immediate results (hopefully negative) as some bloods can take several days to get back although the Addison's test only takes a few hours.

Everything crossed here for you.  Good luck, Teri x
- By husky [ca] Date 28.11.05 16:24 UTC
I thought of Addisons or Cushings too, you need to get her tested for those.
- By Teri Date 28.11.05 16:26 UTC
Cushing's - good point ;)
- By Sarah Gorb [gb] Date 28.11.05 16:32 UTC
I have just gone through dog being sick, can she have a blockage in her stomach, get the vet to take an xray to rule this out.

Good luck and let us know how you get on

Sharon, i have everything crossed here for Sheena :-) Please keep us posted. xx

Hi,
sorry to hear about your dog not well, hope all goes well at the vet!
I have a posting about my bitch on the 'parvo in Scotland' topic. We were at the Champ show in Scotland on Nov 5th, and the monday afterwards my bitch was sick in the morning and didn't want her food...not like Inka at all! Monday night she was ok and ate her tea, then tuesday morning ate her breakfast, so I thought 'good, she's ok now' but by tuesday evening, she brought it all back up again. So I starved her from then on, but she continued being sick through the night and the next day, which by now is bile as there was no food to bring up. She was drinking plenty tho. Wednesday night, tried her with a bit of chicken and rice, which she would eat, but bring it up later on. My middle bitch was also sick for one day, but ok after that, but Inka was still not right, and by now quite depressed and weak. She did not have the runs or anything at this point, just the sickness, which stopped because she wasn't eating, but was weak with not having any food. Friday morning I phoned the vet and explained what the symptoms were and she said it was probably a bug/virus and to bring her in on the saturday morning. Friday evening, she suddenly seemed brighter and was looking for food, so tried her with some scrambled egg which she loved and kept down. Saturday morning she ate her breakfast and was fine and seemed back to her old self, so I phoned the vets and said she had suddenly picked up. Vet said the bug had probably run it's course. My 9yr old dog had now started to show signs of the same thing, so he was starved for 24hrs and was fine. They all had the runs at the end, pure bright orange liquid. So it was some sort of bug passing itself on through the dogs, which I presume Inka had picked up while in Scotland. They are all fine now, so I hope it turns out to be something similar with your dog, and nothing serious!
will check back later to see how you got on at the vets!

Well the vet does seem to think Sheena may have addisons desease. He did her bloods which only took 20 mins so we were able to wait at vets for results.
After checking the bloods and seeing her symptoms he said he was going to test for addisons. He said she was very dehydrated so we left her at the vets over night on a drip.
He said he would treat for addisons right away as if he waited untill he had the results it could be too late for treatment.
Since Friday she had lost another 2kg, over 4lb. Cant believe how fast she went down hill.
Im very worried about her even though she is in the best place. Is there any chance she could still be in danger. I have to phone vets tomorow morning.
Thnk you so much for all replies.

Hi Sharon,

I recently met a lady at the vet hospital whose little mongrel bitch has been having treatment for Addison's for 7 years (she's 9 now) - she was a perky little bitch too and only attending there for a check-up :) so please remember that although not curable, it is a manageable condition!

There's lots of stuff on the web for the disease but TBH it's probably best to wait for the results of ACTH test in case it's negative for Addison's.  She could have a different condition which needs to be determined although dogs can become "Adisonian" - (in simple terms, where the illness is a secondary disease to another).

Easy to say I know but try not to worry too much.  Take care of yourself just now so that you are in a strong frame of mind and able to take in whatever the vet advises you of when his examinations and tests are completed.  It may help to have a note pad complete with a list of Qs for the call tomorrow ;)

God bless. Teri x

A friend has recently just lost her young Boxer bitch to interssusseption
basically the stomach/intestines telescoped on it's self.
Sadly the vet didn't realise what the problems were until they did a barium
x-ray. The bitch had been poorly for a week. Vomitting etc.
She survived the operation but sadly died 48 hours later :(
She wasn't even two years old :(

Awww Sharon, I real do feel for you right now.

I'm sending lots of big {{{HUGS}}} to you and Sheena. xx
- By Missie Date 29.11.05 23:04 UTC
Oh boxacrazy that is awful :( Maddie went 10 days, 6 of which she was hospitalised at the vets, before they found that out !!  she made a full recovery but I could have lost her, she wasn't even 12 months at the time :( Her symptoms were mainly refusing to eat, being sick if she tried and dire rear.
- By Teri Date 30.11.05 00:17 UTC
Hi Sharon,

Anything new to report after your earlier call to the vet?  Hope you and Sheena are bearing up.

Think of you both, Teri :)
- By sharonb [gb] Date 30.11.05 09:06 UTC
Teri Kerry and all thanks for your concern and kind words. Sheena had to stay at the vets untill closing yesterday. They wanted to try a special diet and make sure she is keeping it down. She was looked after very well the receptionists really showed her love. They took her for 2 small walks and they said she was fantasticly behaved and had a wonderfull nature.
We have to continue with the special diet feeding her just 2 dessert spoons 6 times a day. She as to have 1/4 pint water every hour or so.
She is eating all her food and drinking her water and keeping it down.
We have to take her back today for a check and we will ghet the results maybe tomorrow or day after.
Up to now although being quiet she seems happier.
In a way I do hope she does have addisons as at least I know there is treatment.
- By justlou Date 30.11.05 11:32 UTC
Sharon......I'm so pleased to hear that Sheena is home :-)

Good luck.
- By Teri Date 30.11.05 12:24 UTC
Hi again Sharon,

Thanks for the update - delighted that Sheena is perking up and back at home with you :)  Although being in the vet surgery/hospital is often the best place at times, there's nothing quite like the relief of them being allowed home!

Everything crossed here for you that your next update brings even better news.

Take care of yourself and giving Sheena a gentle cuddle from me ;)  Teri
- By sharonb [gb] Date 30.11.05 21:59 UTC
Not looking so good now. Sheena seemed to be doing great. Alot happier and brighter untill midday today. Since then she as been sick several times. She as been back to the vets she doesnt have addisons(I wish she did at least I know there is some hope.
The vet is xraying her friday morning. In my heart I feel as though she just doesnt want to go on anymore.
What can be the problem
- By justlou Date 30.11.05 22:06 UTC
Awww Sharon, I'll keep everything crossed here for Friday when Sheena visits the vet.

Hi Sharon,

I'm so sorry - I know it can seem a relief to be on track for a specific diagnosis but try and stay positive ;)  Hopefully she will have a lesser problem than Addison's and at least your vet has been keeping on top of things.

On the being sick front, she will be probably be producing excess stomach acid because of repeated vomiting.  She may not feel like eating again for a few hours but if you can get her to take a little of something it will reduce the acidity.

Do you have something like tinned carrot soup in the house?  If you can get her to eat a little relatively plain soup (preferably without any meat, poultry stock in it or pieces of them, it will give her hydration and nourishment.  Some dogs, particularly with a number of diseases that present similar symptoms to Sheena, have begun to develop multi-intolerances and so it is a good idea to start now by eliminating any of her normal food from her diet.  If you can think of a novel protein and novel bulking agent/carb that she has NEVER at any time been fed, then shop for them so that over the weekend you have supplies and choices :)  Home prepared is ideal if you can manage - say if she's never had mashed potato give her that and use ONE unusual (to her) protein such as cottage cheese, white fish, venison, duck.

HTH, Good luck and update on the X-ray as soon as you're able to ;)  Luv Teri x

Just for now Iam giving her the special food for sensitive stomaches which the vet gave me. She was fed a small meal of it about 2 hours ago and as kept it down upto now.
Some1 told me today Akitas as a life expectancy of 8 years. Im sure thats not true. Anyway before this illness she showed no signs of old age.
- By sharonb [gb] Date 01.12.05 15:51 UTC
Sheena as been really ill. Vomiting alover and lifeless.
Rushed her to the vets, xrays showed nothing she is being opperated on. The vet wanted to let her go.
How could I

Sharon......my heart goes out to you.  In February this year my 3 yr old border collie Skye was being sick for no reason and off her food.  She too went down hill over a number of weeks, lost a lot of weight and refused to eat. We were at the vets nearly every few days with her. she too was given sensitivity meat and had several blood tests taken. The first showed up that she had pancreatitis and she was treated for this, she got a little better then worse again. More tests were down and she was x-rayed on two seperate occassions with nothing untoward found. The vet then did an endoscopy and nothing was seen. She was in pain during the night and taken to the vets however she unfortunatly passed away before they operated on her. A post mortem was carried out and they found a plastic radiator top in her stomach. It had been there for about 2 yrs (i know this as we moved house and it was from our old house) It could not be digested and caused a blockage. Skye died from Toxic shock syndrome.  Is there any chance Sheena could have eaten something which has caused a blockage ? X-rays do not always show foreign things up (apparently - or so my vet said) Especially if it has been there for a while....
I hope and pray things go okay with Sheena.......
