hi we have a bulldog she is coming up to 8 weeks pregnant, what we would like to ask is should we wait to see if she can deliver on her own or take her right to the vets when she begins whelping, where she would have a c section. also we have been told that bulldogs do not carry full term, how early could we expect them?

Admin: as the breed is relevant to this thread, I have allowed it to remain. Should the rest of the thread turn into an advert for up and coming  litters, then it will be removed

er, shouldn't you have done this research BEFORE mating your bitch??!?

I do agree with onetwothree...HOWEVER they are now on their way.Does your bitch come from self whelping lines????

Agree with the others you have left this horribly late and one can't help wondering how little reseach went into the mating plan either.  As Archer indicates I think the whelping plan is best formed by consulting your bitches breeder to find out about the likelyhood of a section being required in her lines and then a discussion with your vet as to the apparent size of her litter, pelvic girdle etc. and judge it from there but from what I hear you had better have you cheque book ready as a large proportion of this breed are delivered that way.

we have done a lot of research we have also bred several litters of other breeds, just wondered what your thoughts were on these things but hey no problems our vet feels a c section would suit our dog and we have been told she can start from anytime from 60 days onwards. we are not amateurs we were just curious

our bitch is not from a self whelping mother, and a c section will cost approx 300 pounds, which we considered to be quite reasonable when it comes to our dogs best interests

When she does have them I want pictures............dont forget...or else ;)

thankyou carolyn for your very nice response, our vets are very good so we'll do exactky what they suggest, they have delivered about 6 to 8 litters of bulldogs, one being our dogs mum so our ruby will be delivering where she was born

You are very welcome
i wish you well with your babies.
If you need a nanny for them let me know I LOVED every second of it.

Ive only had 1 bulldog litter but we waited till she was in the early stages of labour and took her to the vet for a check up who advised us to take her home for a few hours and bring her back later which we did,she had a ceaser and had 6 pups.

It really depends on you,I know of someone whose bitch had 2 pups born before she even knew she was in labour,Ive known others leave it and lost the pups or mom so it is down to luck sometimes.

Hiya Torr, we  booked our bitch in for an elective c-section as this is what her mother had and after discussions with the breeder and the vet we thought this would also be in her best interests.  Good luck with everything and keep us posted as to how she is doing.

Cheers Kirsty

thankyou, kirsty, our breeder also advised us to c section as the stud throws quite large pups and some owners have had problems with the babies getting stuck in the birth canal so i think its the best option too, she has about 8 days to go tops so were in for a busy time.

As you had discussed this, both with your vet and your breeder, why ask for other opinions on this board?   Unless its to get free advertising!

Good luck with the puppies, even so.

Best of luck with the puppies Torr.  I imagine that you were seeing how things went, and had not quite come to a firm decision about things - nothing wrong with that.  I hope it all goes well for you, whatever you decide.  p.s.  I have pm'd you  ;-)

You dont need free advertising with bulldogs.

They asked for opinions and sometimes other members know a little more or can confirm that your doing the right thing...

This board has gone very cynical just recently :(

I do agree Carolyn - and I'm one of those who has become very cynical ....but when somebody just joins and then asks such pointed questions, it does make me wonder.......

lokis mum, i feel very sorry for people like you who are so opinionated, i have belonged to this site for a while, normally all i do is look at peoples posts and maybe try to learn a little more than i already know, cos as you know your never to old to learn. i do not need to advertise  as we have a list of nice homes waiting for a puppy off us, also our breeder has a list if we needed one, this however will not be required, so try to be a little more understanding when people ask questions as if they are asking they are genuinely caring people who just want the best for their babies
