My pup is on her 1st season and I am wondering when is the best time to have her spayed, do I do it before her next seaon also what's the average cost of spaying.

Does it depend on size of dog or is it all a set price.

She is a shih tzu in case it does depend on the size.

I had an American Cocker spayed in July, although it was an emergency and the bill was £307, the itemised bill showed the spay part to be £109 plus VAT. Kitty is 10kg.

Hi there,

It varies from vet to vet, so it is a good idea to ask your own vet about this. They will also explain when the best time to spay is and the reasons behind it.

All the best,
Patty

Where we are it all depends on weight but its £120 for 'smaller' dogs and £145 for 'larger' :)  If you're on benefits and can prove it with the required documents you can ring Dogs Trust and they'll put you in touch with a vet in your area who is part of their neutering scheme - cost is £25 for any size dog/bitch at our local one :)

£156 for Maddie to be done - 38 kg - whether that includes vat or not I don't know yet :)

Kayla's was about £210 and she was about 25kg at the time, our vets charge more for dogs weighing more than 20kg as obviously they need more to get and keep them under and also need more people to move them afterwards..and maybe its harder to find all the 'bits' in a bigger belly cavity :D

The best time to spey is usually the midpoint between seasons, i.e. 3-4months. At the practice i work at spey prices run from around £110 (small dog) - £170 (Giant Dog) incl vat. The price varies greatly from practice to practice. My advice is choose a vet who you can trust, phone up your local surgery and discuss the procedure with one of their vets.

Thanks for all of your advice, I will be ringing the vets up to see when they can fit me in (well not me, Coco) as soon as her season has finished.

I've just had Poppy (9 month old Cavalier) spayed, she weighs 9kg and it was £80.81 plus VAT, this also included pain killer injection which lasts 2 days and antibiotic injection in case of any infection.  She also had an umbilical hernia op at the same time which was £10.

She had a her first season in September - day 1 was 2nd Sept.  Vet recommended waiting 6 weeks from day 28.

I got my Whippet X spayed for £25.  The vets would normally charge around £130 but we had a DogsTrust voucher.  The vets charged Dogs Trust and additional £33.  So I wrote a cheque for £50 to Dogs Trust.

my vet charges according to size. I had my lab bitch done at 10mths, and she was £85 done as a 'medium' dog. She's quite petite though, but couldn't tell you much she weighed then!

My girl is going to cost a fortune then :)  She is already 32kg and may get to about 50 byt the time the op comes round.

We are waiting till midway between 2 and 3rd season as my vet will not to do it until then (she said it depended on the breed). Also I heard that if you do it too early, their hormones haven't kicked in and they stay puppy like forever, I want this puppy stage over soon so couldn't bear to spend the next 9 years or so they way she is now.
