My mother has turned to drink in her old age!!!  She's 85 and has decided she likes a tipple every evening so I've collected some miniatures for her stocking and a selection of teas too as well as marmalades and jams.

My mum likes pretty embroidered cotton hankies, she always carries them

My mum's a nightmare to buy for.  Whatever she wants she goes and buys so will be interested in replies myself

I always do the same for my Mum (79), I usually find a trip to M&S helps.

Luxury food bits
Nice Bubble Bath, liquid soap.

I usually try and think everyday items in a luxury format.

A book or video usually goes down well too.

IF she is interested in needlecrafts, then how about a few sewing "notions" whcih she probably would not buy for herself eg:
embroidery scissors (saw some lovely ones shaped like a kingfinsher in a gold tone metal), a pretty needle book and matching pincushion.  An illuminated magnifier.  Also how about a small embroidery/tapestry kit, one of the upmarket sort, such as Elizabeth Bradley.

It was my mum's birthday on Friday so I got her John Wayne films DVD set!  Don't know whether your mum will have a DVD.  Really good value at Price-drop TV.

One year we did my OH nans a hamper each with things they both like, did it all proper with a little basket tissue paper and the wrapping looked real nice

Best thing my kids ever bought my mum was a mobile phone.It took her an eternity to find out how to use it,even though it was the kind that you spoke the name into,pressed one button and it dialed automatically!!!!!! Now when ever she is out we know she is safe.Came in handy one year when my mum and dad got stuck in the car in a flood.
Apart from that we always get the usual old lady smellies containing lavender.God only knows why old ladies like the smell of the stuff.
ps........my mother is 75 years old so i think she can now be classed as an old lady.hehe

Ooh sounds a lot like mine - must be the age! How about going to a craft shop and getting bits and pieces for hand made cards, mounts for x stitch etc. 'Natural' light bulbs are great for close work on dark evenings and can just be put in to a normal reading lamp. Magnifiers are a great idea, also needle threaders, subscriptions to a magazine. I also believe that there are websites that will convert a favorite photo in to a cross stich pattern which could be nice for a favorite photo. Oh and my mum is just getting in to pilaties having had a fall at teh gym she says she wants to stay away from the weights :rolleyes:
