Topic Other Boards / Foo / *^$"!? search engines :(
- By Dill [gb] Date 26.11.05 21:20 UTC
Which search engines are you lot finding the best lately?   I usually use aol-google or google or IE but they're all equally cr*p lately, so which ones are you using?  What the h... has happened to these all-powerful search engines?  It isn't long ago that they floated Google as it was sooo good and was making so much money, but now it seems they floated too high and have lost all power  I could do better in the local library lately

Any suggestions gratefully appreciated :D

I love Google and have used it since it first started :)
- By gwen [gb] Date 26.11.05 22:37 UTC
I use Google too, sometimes several times each day, and don't see any difference, or any less speed or usefulness.  Perhaps something on your PC is causing a problem?
bye

I can't see that there is a competitor to Google.

Can you be a bit more specific as to how it doesn't satisfy your needs?  It could be that you would benefit in doing a 'Google Tutorial' or perhaps we could all pass on some handy hints as to how to best find what you are looking for.  Between us all we must have 1001 of them!

e.g. one I particularly like - if you want to know what a word means type define: and then the word!  It will bring up dictionary or encyclopaedic definitions.

Haven't tried anything than other than google lately but then I've not had any trouble.  In fact found it excelled itself this week.  What trouble are you having?
- By Bluebell [gb] Date 27.11.05 09:29 UTC
I use google and havnt had any problems. However there have been a number of viruses going round in the last week or so, which I find can sometimes effect major sites. Generally slows them down a lot while they try to fight it off.

I use ask as well as google - would recommend both!

I google a lot :D

I absolutly loathe Google, I can never seem to get up what I want, and there are so many adverts all over the place, I either get annoyed with it, or find something interesting that I go off on a tangent about, even though it is nothing to do with what I wanted in the first place  ;)

I have always used IE, but must admit recently more and more ofen, it makes no difference what you do a search on you get tonnes of these price compare sites come up, but I do eventually find what I want with it.
- By CherylS Date 27.11.05 14:13 UTC
When you say adverts do you mean popups?
- By Natalie1212 Date 27.11.05 14:19 UTC
No not popups, but before you get to the actual results there is a big list of adverts, and then when you get to the results there are 1000 links to eBay and Amazon then most of the things that come up are American, then you have the price comparison sites, then all of the personal websites like 'Adrians Diary' or 'Louisa's Blog' (both are just examples pulled out of my head BTW!!) etc by the time I have found what I am looking for, I'm not in the slightest bit interested, or know I could have found it quicker by using IE.

I think you must have to have a knack with Google, and search for the right words, where as with IE, I put in what it is I want and I usually find it pretty quickly.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 27.11.05 14:24 UTC
Are you using Google UK? That doesn't have anything like that.

Of course it has the blog entries containing the words you put in, but only if they've had loads of hits.
- By Natalie1212 Date 27.11.05 14:25 UTC
I always put .co.uk, so I guess I am using the UK one?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 27.11.05 14:29 UTC
If you want a particular phrase, it needs to be within quotation marks, but if you want general information just type in keywords without quotes.

For instance "undescended testicle dogs" (with the quote marks) gives only two related results, whereas the same words without the quotes gives [link http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=undescended+testicle+dogs&btnG=Search&meta=]loads[/link] - and no masses of adverts.

Edit. Pah! It won't link, though! :D
- By Natalie1212 Date 27.11.05 14:34 UTC
Ah I see!!! Many thanks, I might have a bit more luck with it in the future!! :D

The link didn't work because you missed the last ] off of the first [link] - if that makes any sence whatsoever!!! Thinking about it, I don't know if the 'wordy' links are different.
- By CherylS Date 27.11.05 14:35 UTC
I think I know what you are talking about re the adverts for ebay and amazon but on my screen they are in a column on the right hand side of the screen which can be ignored.  It doesn't interfere with my search.  I wonder why they're coming up in the main body of results?

edited to say I google generally but have the option to click into UK only if I want and I still don't get all the ads that Natalie is talking about.  Curious
- By CherylS Date 27.11.05 14:43 UTC
Also play around with the advanced search on Google.  It can be very useful if you want to narrow a search down by eliminating certain words
- By Dill [gb] Date 27.11.05 16:13 UTC
I'm wondering if it's anything to do with the recent change in presentation of search results in aol   but even typing things in speech commas doesn't make any difference, I still get mostly rubbish along with all the ebay, amazon, etc adverts.  often nothing comes up when I know there is a lot of material available relevant to the search I'm doing :(  It hasn't always been like this, as I say its recent and very frustrating and annoying :(

I'm also able to specify UK sites only and there seems to be no difference in performance - It's still loads of cr*p along with very little of any use :(
- By husky [ca] Date 27.11.05 16:21 UTC
I love google! But I don't bother with the UK only sites button, I just put in what I want and then put +UK on the end and the results are much better.

Ive always found Ask Jeeves  better than google!
