Topic Dog Boards / Health / My dog's face is puffed out, eyes too
- By svengoolie [us] Date 26.11.05 07:47 UTC
I am so scared.  I was getting ready for bed when I saw my dog looking at me... face puffed out and one eye looking all messed up.  He really didn't even look like the same dog.  When I looked closer at his eye, it's like there's this grey slime looking stuff in the corner of it.  I mean slime in the sense that it should be some sort of skin there.  It's not like something I could wash out.

He isn't acting like he's in any pain, but I'm worried.  It's the middle of the night, so I can't take him anywhere.  If someone knows what's wrong with him, I would appreciate it very much.

If it's the middle of the night for you, you're obviously not in the UK - but your dog sounds as though it is in urgent need of veterinary attention.  It may have an acute allergic reaction which could cause shock, been bitten by a wild animal or even a venomous snake or spider (no idea what country your in!)

In any event, if you've got a car bundle him in immediately and drive to the emergency vet centre - you must have one somewhere, regardless of locale or time of night.  Failing that get on the phone and locate an emergency vet centre or hospital that way.

Please update when you've had him treated.
Good luck,

Teri

I didn't even realize this was a UK board at first... it was just the first thing that came up on google.  I'm from America, of course.  I'm 19 and I live with my parents, and they have the final say in everything.  I woke them up, yelling that he needs to go to some hospital.  They won't do it.  They say we can't afford it.  So my dog is upstairs now throwing up, shaking and whining nonstop.  He's in pain and there's nothing I can do to save him.  This is such bullshit.

What a horrible situation for you. It sounds very much like a sting or bite - can you see any wound? Could the 'skin' in the corner of his eye be the third eyelid? If so that's also a sign he needs vet treatment. Can't you offer to repay your parents whatever it costs?

Whats happened to this dog?  Please reply as I cant settle knowing there is a dog somewhere that is really suffering and isnt getting medical attention.

Like Jeangenie suggests could you not offer to repay the vet bills, I wouldnt let your parents sleep while the dog is suffering if you annoy them enough im sure they will get up and take action!!!

Me too - hope the OP updates soon. Poor dog, with owners that won't take him for help in an emergency! :-(

years ago one of my dogs face became swollen and it was very scary ..it turned out he had an absess on his tooth a course of antibiotics cleared it up extremely quickly.
so the vet bill may not be as expensive as you think!

Simlar thing happened to one of our dogs, rang the vet even though it was one a.m.advised me to apply cold compress to the eyes, the swelling did go down graduely and she was back to normal within a few hours,it was a allergic reaction to somthing, however please try and see a vet asap.

Any update on your dog?  Did you manage to persuade your parents to cover the cost and you'd repay them?  Or come to any solution at all?

Everyone is welcome to post for advice and just general chat but it's always nice to get some feedback ;) - especially when about a health issue that is potentially very serious.
When you get the opportunity, could you please let the members who have tried to help you know the outcome for your dog.  We're all genuinely concerned.

Regards, Teri :)

Really hope you managed to get something sorted out for your dog.  We had a similar thing with our white GSD on Christmas Day.  His face and eyes puffed up, the veins in his muzzle were bulging.  It came on whilst we were out walking and by the time we got home he was almost unrecognisable.  We took him to the vet immediately and was told he had a bad allergic reaction to a badger set he'd been sniffing round.  Apparently they had seen this sort of thing before.  He was given an antihistamine injection and within two or three hours was back to normal.   Good luck and please let us know if he is ok.
