Hi-Can someone please give me some advice- I am expecting my puppy on the 9th dec- with him being a boy, i ask the question can you train them to go to toliet in a litter tray? I know taht it has been possible to do this with a female but i cant see this working long-term with a male? does anyone have a male that they have trained to do this?

Why would you want to do that? Surely if you want an animal that doesn't need to go for walks an actual cat would be better........

I think it would be possible but I don't see any point, he needs to get outside for exercise and mental stimulation as well toileting. You should be able to take him into your garden even before vaccination is completed as long as it is private and not used by other unvaccinated dogs.

Yes you can train them to use a litter tray, especially handy in the winter or wet weather.
My Spanish that I've had for a year goes on a cat litter tray which is great for me. He lived outside previously but soon picked up regarding this. Actually he wees in the bucket outside and my youngest boy now copies him :d

I'm sorry but I simply can't see why anyone wants a dog trained to use a cat litter tray. Especially when it'd be so much easier to train a cat.
I have several male chihuahuas and none of them would dream of using my home as a toilet. They are a very intelligent breed that like to please. So very easy to train.
If you are thinking of when you go out, and they are left alone? then my suggestion would be for you to buy them their own puppy crate. They will never foul where they sleep. Also this is a much safer option for them when left alone.
I presume that you were the person that asked on here before? If so im afraid guests can only make one post, if you want to ask more question you will have to join the website (which is free ;) )

Why do people suggest getting a cat??? I can't see whats wrong with training a wee doggie to use a tray? I have a couple of Yorkie boys now as well as the big girls(Newfies...obviously!) and they DON'T like going out into the cold wet weather! They're tiny, they get cold VERY quickly and I don't understand your reactions? To be honest I wish I had trained the older one to a litter tray! And no I don't need another cat, I've got 2 of those too! They're nothing like dogs, they don't have a quarter of the personality my dogs have! And they bring half chewed mice and voles home for me to puke over! So I definately don't want any more! At least the Yorkies SHOULD bring home a rat with more meat on!!! LOL :D All the best, Dawn.

My dog was trained because he lived outside for 6 years of his life and didn't know what a house was! He is about 90% clean but does have the odd accident. Better to have a tray for him to wee in rather than him wee up my kitchen units.
