How awful, the poor parents.  They were already bringing up a wonderful special girl and now for this to happen to her.  Sometimes I wonder how life can be so cruel.  I hope that she recovers well and I am sure that we all feel for her parents.

It said on the TV this morning that they were Pit Bulls!!  Again wondered how this could be seeing as they are illegal.
- By shelwil [gb] Date 24.11.05 20:13 UTC
There are many things that are illegal, drugs for instance, it still does not stop people taking and selling them?? Does it???

I have heard of a lot of pitbulls in my area, the are also being bred with lurcher/greyhound type breeds to make as they put it "killing machines" they use these dogs to kill foxes, so cruel, this kind of breeding make me so angry.

It is because of idiots like this that these attacks happen,  I hope the little girl makes a full recovery.
- By Dill [gb] Date 24.11.05 21:42 UTC
Plenty of pitbull types in this area, one bitch appears to be feeding pups regularly  and NO they aren't large staffys :(  :(

Hope this little girl makes a full recovery and isn't traumatised by any dog she sees from now on

Oh poor little girl, so sorry for her family.  I collected my nephew from school this week, and was amazed to see what looked very much like a pitbull waiting at the school gates, he was well behaved, on a lead.  Obviously a young dog, brindle coloured, much taller than a Bull Terrier - perhaps almost Boxer height, but very pwerful looking, much heavier boned than a boxer, typical head you would expect from a PB - and with cropped ears!  I was stupified.  HE could well have been a Bull terrier/Bullmastiff cross, I suppose, but how on earth the cropped ears?
bye

I can't remember what a Pitbull looks like but I have a feeling that my next door neighbours have one.  She's got a wonderful temperament, but is about 23", brindle, solid looking girl, definitely too  big for a Staffie.

maybe it was an import Gwen, Cropping is still allowed in many places in europe and USA. Just seems that the U.k has this rule.

>Cropping is still allowed in many places in europe

I gather it's banned in most European countries too now.

I too thought pit bulls were illegal but yesterday I seen an ad in a free ads paper for staffordshire x pit bull puppies! :(
- By Brainless [gb] Date 25.11.05 11:26 UTC
Definately ilegal and any crtopss with or dog that can be considered of pitbull type, which can mean any bullbreed cross depending on the persons opinion.
- By Isabel Date 25.11.05 11:32 UTC
You could draw it to the attention of the paper in question that they are advertising an illegal breed.

Hi JG
I think that maybe the case that it isn't supposed to go on. (but in reality it does) I have just moved back from living over the other side of the water and there were alot of dogs that were still having croppings done. maybe they go to a backyard vet who knows.
Em
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 25.11.05 12:46 UTC
Yes, you can ban anything and it still goes on. They're as likely to do it themselves as go to a vet. :(
- By Brainless [gb] Date 25.11.05 13:57 UTC
I wasn't aware theat cropping was done by vets in the countries where it is practiced.  I got the impression (cpuld be wrong) that breeders did it themselves, as different breeds were cropped diferently.
- By Isabel Date 25.11.05 14:00 UTC
I always thought it was done under anaesthetic although I appreciate that wouldn't have been the case many years ago.  Sounds even more barbaric if it's still done without.
- By Goldmali Date 25.11.05 14:01 UTC
Pretty certain vets do it. I read a book once written by an american vet (bit like the US verison of Herriot) and he mentioned doing ear cropping a lot.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 25.11.05 14:16 UTC
Certainly vets do it in America, although from what some posters tell us here about US vets, I wouldn't be surprised if some people do it themselves. In countries where it's illegal, I can't imaging many vets agreeing to do it, so it'd be a DIY job. :(
- By gwen [gb] Date 25.11.05 16:47 UTC
When I saw the ears I assume he must have been imported, but then realised that the DDA forbids this as well, so surely DEFRA woudl have picked it up at point of entry?  Maybe it is an illegal cropping done in the UK, took me by surpise as it is the first I have seen herar, apart form an import Dobe.
bye

Somebody has managed to get quite a few Presa Canaria in the country - the 'Mastini' guy who started off the Olde Tyme Bulldogges. If you look at his site you'll see he has several with cropped ears and brought in as Dogo Canaria (different name, same breed). You know DEFEA - typical government thing - you could walk in with a Dogo Argentino if you put it down as an English Bull cross on the paperwork.

>Somebody has managed to get quite a few Presa Canaria in the country

The Presa Canaria isn't a banned breed though, is it? ;) Those are the Japanese tosa, Dogo Argentino and Fila Braziliero, along with 'any dog of the type known as the pitbull terrier', and crosses of all these breeds.

Hi, a lot of the breeds that are about that look like or ARE pit bulls are called American Bulldogs! Well at least here in Liverpool when I ask! Anyone else come across them?? Does anyone have an update on the poor girl? Thanks Dawn.
- By nemasis [gb] Date 25.11.05 22:48 UTC
The Am.Bulldog is nothing like a Pitbull they are two completly different breeds. The Am.Bulldog is a Pure strain of Bulldog while the Pitbull is a Terrier cross Bulldog, bred more to the Terrier side.
- By newfiedreams Date 25.11.05 22:56 UTC
Ohh sorry, I must have misunderstood that the Am Bulldog CROSSED with a Terrier results in a Pit Bull, and you say despite the fact that it's crossed with a bulldog, it isn't anything LIKE a bulldog??? Of course!!! Why couldn't I see that!!
- By nemasis [gb] Date 25.11.05 23:06 UTC
Maybe because it was crossed like a hell of a long time ago!!!
- By bowers Date 26.11.05 01:55 UTC
The image portrayed of these  "american staffs"    on the website is hardly endearing/
