hi i need help my bitch has just had five pups they are 2 days old  and i have little no knowledge on what to do next
they all seem healthy and are all feeding well  but the bitch will not leave them in her  welping box at night she always trying to bring them to me  or put them in strange places say me and my misses would be  watching  tv in the lounge she would be alright for a hour on her own  and then she would bring one in her mouth and put it in my lap  and sit with it for about five mins and then go off and get anouther   and so on untill i have got all five  or she will take them to my bed and put them under the duvet  is this because she is to cold or because she has always slept in are bed  if i close the door to where her box is  in the kitchen  she screams the house down and digs at door  and she left one for about an hour under my bed  and didnt seem to look for it  should i handle them back to the  whelping box or leave it for her to do? should i handle them if she puts it in my lap?
and how warm should the box be ?
also she is always standing on them and lying on them somtimes for ages and they realy scream
scream ?
also she seems very worried and confused like she does not no what to do with them
please help me

The box needs to be pretty warm. I put it under a table and have blankets hanging all the way round like a curtain, to make a dark 'den'. If she's as unsettled as you say someone'll have to stay with her 24/7 to make sure she looks after them properly. You'd be surprised how comfy cushions and a sleeping bag on the floor can be.

I agree with JG!  We also put covers etc. all around the cage so it's like a den.  Also if she's not settling as JG has said you need to put up a made up bed next to her so that she can't get out but at least she'll know that you're near by!

Hope she settles down soon.

Hi Dale
I get the impression that your girl wants you to help her with her babies. Don't be afraid to handle them, if she didn't want you to touch them then she would be busy guarding them instead of asking you to share the caring of them with her !!!!!!!

Has the vet checked the bitch and the litter after whelping..  one of my bitches, after whelping her 2nd litter, had eclampsia, I knew what was happening and called the vet back out.  But, she kept bringing her pups to me....pups were suckling but she was not beginning to produce any milk, I had to hand rear the litter.  This being her 2nd litter, I still dont know if she knew something was wrong, but after I started to bottle feed, she carried on bringing the pups to me for feeding. Usually milk can take up to 3 days to come in, but Emma's never did....

Put the puppies back in the box - if you're near the box with her she won't feel compelled to get them out.

You must have an excellent relationship with her if she trusts you so much that she wants to take her pups away from a safe warm den to be with you!

... and of course it's not too late to buy yourself a copy of The Book of the Bitch so you can gain a clearer understanding of what's happening during pregnancy, whelping and after!

Good luck.

What is she in?  I would be unhappy with my bitch bringing her pups to me.  Do you have a cage that you could put them in and fasten her in?  But be there all the time so you can make sure she's happy with the situation.
