Topic Dog Boards / Health / Kennel Cough??
- By Sara1640 [gb] Date 23.11.05 19:02 UTC
Hello all,

Been to the vets with my black lab this morning who 12 hours previously started coughing - being a lab i wondered if she had scabbed some food from the bin or something, but the vet said that it's kennel cough or trachea ....blah blah......!!! (am confident she has not been in bin/laundry now)

Anyway, how can she have got this? she hasn't been in kennels, the vet said it spreads like our flu would and that all it takes is a dog cough in her face but to our recollection this hasn't happened in the last 10 days (incubation period?)

So, been prescribed oxytet, told the cough would last at least a week which means in turn piles of bile/sick for a week or so which isn't a problem but how can i prevent this happening again because it really upsets me to see her this way!!!

Thanks for your help.

Sxx

She could have picked it up anywhere on her walk or out and about.

They call it kennel cough as it is notorious for spreading in boarding kennels if one dog come in with it.  If you have any other dogs they too could get it.

It is very contagous and you should keep her away for others for at least a couple of weeks.  It rarely causes complications unless the dog is very young or old.

Get her some childrens Benylin from the chemist, that will help sooth it, use the childrens dose on her.
