Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Too Long Between Puppies???
- By Jewel [gb] Date 23.11.05 00:23 UTC
Hello,

I don't know if anyone will be up at this hour except me but I would really love some opinions please.
My girl is on day 59 today and had her first puppy at 8pm since then she is fairly relaxed although she is panting but she has not had any contractions etc. I can see that there are more puppies to come and wonder if I should get het to the vets now or leave he a little longer. Just to make things difficult the only vet around here that deals with out of hours is quite a distance so obviously I would rather not upset her and the puppy unless absolutely necessary.
What do you think??

Thankyou
Debbie

Hi Debbie, I'm awake but probable not much use..lol. All I can say is that my girl went 4 hours between the last two puppies. I thought she was all finished, gave her a clean bed etc then the last one popped out. I THINK that as long as she's not straining for too long then it's ok but maybe you could call your vet to check?

I have had bitches go up to three hours between pups, and also has a logn gap and a healthy pup produced after 8 hours.  I woudl be getting conscerned about secondary inertia and the welfare of remaining pups with only one born for this long.

As she has already had onw pup it is safe to administer oxytocin.  One shot may be enough to start things off again or she might need one for each pup.

Please get her to the Vet asap.  With luck he may give yu Oxutocin to administer at home if the need arises or he may have to see if she gets going on her own after one.

Any news????  Been worrying about your girl.
- By Jewel [gb] Date 23.11.05 08:12 UTC
Hi, Thankyou for all your help.
I took her to the vets and after two oxytocin jabs she delivered her next lad, he is huge and she really needed some help from the vet with him. Unfortunately she then needed an injection to start her for every puppy but they were all delivered a lot easier, Thankfully !!
We have 6 in total and they and mum are doing fine. One needed a lot of help to start breathing and I'm not sure he is going to make it but I will do everything I can to help him.
So, I've not had any sleep yet and boy am I tired !!

Best Wishes
Debbie

My breed are prone to slow whelping. I had a litter of 3 that a year ago that went 5 hours between each pup !!!!  It it had been my first I would have been frantic.

Congratulations on your litter, hope the wee one makes it o.k. the sleepless nights will start now, I dont know which is worse having a baby in the house or having to look after pups,  Some nights I am still up during the night making food for the pups as mum is only feeding them twice a day now they are 5 wks old and doing really well.

I dont know if this is much help now but we had a very slow labour with one of our bitches and the vet told us to put our finger into the vagina and touch the neck of the womb which gives the same effect as oxytocin.  I will say I never did that was down to my husband but it was certainly a lot less stressful for the bitch than taking her to the vets.  He had to do it with 8 puppies ;)

It's called feathering and you run your fingers inside the vulva, pulling slightly. This stimulates the uterus to contract. I don't know if the effect can be compared to oxytocin but it can certainly help things along.

Thomas....your hubby must have the 'right' touch ROFLAO :D :D :D

Jas he didnt run it just inside the vulva he had to touch the neck of the womb.  The vet did give us step by step instructions on the phone on how to do it and it did involve a lot or KY Jelly but we were told it gives off the same effect as oxytocin.  I do know that after about 10 minutes the puppies dropped out quickly so whatever the reason it worked which is all I know.

I must say by the 8th time I thought it was getting into a bit of fetish ;)
- By jas Date 23.11.05 17:49 UTC
LOL @ the fetish :) I was always told to feather just inside the vulva, but anytime I've done it there has been a pup partly presented. The next time I have a delivery hiatus I'll try it your vet's way.

Well done. Sorry to sound thick here, I have heard
of feathering, but how exactly, as one of you said
just inside the vulva and the other said right up inside.
Can you tell me where abouts exactly ? Its just that
sounds like really helpful advice.
