Topic Dog Boards / General / Meeting for the first time!

Hi all.
I know this is short notice but I would really apprieciate some advice!

i already have a 3 year old Boxer (bitch) and tonight we are getting our second Boxer (dog) of eight weeks.

He has come over from Ireland and is going to a vets over here for his first injection. We were supposed to go get him tomorrow but the stud dog owner (puppies fathers owner) said if we would like she could drop him off at our house when he has been to the vet (think she want to check out where she is leaving the puppy).

What i would like to know is what should I do with our 3yr old when the pup arrives?
Should I put her in another room until he looks around his new home?
Should I keep her with me while he looks around (keeping hold of her)?
Should I just be as normal and let her walk around?

Any suggestions or advice would be much appreiciated!
Thanks for any quick replies!

Michael.

I can only give you my experience of when we brought our 8 week old home and she met our 2 dogs.

Hubby left me in the car on the drive while he went and fetched the dogs out of the house for a walk we let them sniff her with me sat in the car then he took then for a really nice long walk so puppy could have chance to sniff around her new surroundings and then when they came back they met in the garden. Doing this really worked out well for us. Good luck with your new addition.:)

Thats a good idea about the walk - we are planning to do that with our new dog when we introduce her to our other dogs. She will be 9 months when we get her though  (as she is being imported - had to wait for pet passport!) so she will of had all her vaccinations. With an 8 week pup even if it hasnt had all its vaccinations you could still walk them both around the back and front garden together.

Sorry should have said that he took the other 2 dogs for a walk while me and puppy stayed at home and she got used to the surroundings, they then met in the garden when he brought the other 2 back. Just re read my post and if you did get the drift then well done cos it was a bit vague.:) slaps head as must remember to make it really clear.:)

sorry i read it wrong! re-read it and it did sound as you meant it! :) I cant wait to introduce my new dog to the others - we are always talking about how to do it. I think both ideas about the walks - either with or without the puppy are good as it distracts the other dogs abit from the new "intruder!". Ive had 8 months to think about it with ours so it will be great when she finally meets my others! Ive met her and i think it will all be ok as she is so sweet and submissive.

Congratulations on getting your new puppy :) I have always found our older dogs have been very good with small puppies. What we did last time was to let the puppy walk about in our secure garden and then after the puppy has been out for a little while we would let our other dogs out one by one keeping a very close eye on them! Puppies are usually very submissive and the older dogs are gentle with them because they know that they are only pups. I really wouldnt worry too much about them meeting. If i was you i would let the puppy have a little walk about first so he gets his bearings (either in the garden or a room) then let your bitch in. If you wanted to keep her on the lead so you have more control if you think she might be snappy then do so. Try to stay relaxed as your bitch will pick up on it if you are stressed! Enjoy your new puppy! :)

Thanks for all the advice.
Our bitch is very submisive herself! We were worried that she would be afaid of the new pup! Does does not bother much with other dogs! While on walks we walk with others and she just gets on with her own thing. If another dog goes to her she sort of puts her tail between her legs and moves her head away from them nervously.
I'm sure she will be ok though. The lady I am getting the pup from has over 20 expierance with Boxers so I'm sure she'll tell me what to do if she is a bit funny!

Many thanks.

Michael.

Forgot to say. We have a 2 year old son also. Cassy loves him and is very protective of him! As she is with myself and the wife also! I am not afraid of the son meeting the pup as he has been brought up with Cassy and always been ok with her. I was a bit worried incase Cassy felt she will have to protect my son from the pup!

Good Advice!  When we brought the boys home my OH brought the girls out on leads and we all had a walk.  My 6 year old then proceeded to walk the pups( holding their leads in her mouth) home and made them feel welcomed by playing and mothering them.  She has been the best Nanny for them both.

Hi all

Iv just found this website and am eager for information.  Im going to collect my boxer puppy on Saturday he's 12 weeks old.  I need all the advice I can get about house training, food, what to expect etc.  He's had no injections yet so I will have to sort this out as well, I live in Hayes, Middlesex so if anyone knows of a good vet.  Also I really would like to find training classes so again would be grateful for all the advice I can get.  Michael I would be interested to know how you get along with your puppy.

Regards

Bernice

Hi Bernice.

We live near Newcastle so I cannot help you with Vets or training classes, Sorry.

Clay is our second Boxer. We already have a three year old girl called Cassy. When we first got Cassy she spent the first day or so just checking out her new home, then came alive! Grabbing trousers as we walked across the room pulling at shoe lases. Being a normal Boxer, bouncing all over.
When Clay came on Friday he spent maybe 5 mins checking his new home out and then went straight into action! Doing everything Cassy used to do, but going the one extra step!
Boxers are very adventurous and need to be kept thinking. They get bored very easily when left alone for too long! So make sure you give him plenty toys.
As for toilet training. All I can say is to be patient! He will learn with your help! You will learn to pick up his signs for when he wants to go (normally when he stiffs the floor alot). As soon as you notice this take him through the door you want him to go to when he needs out and put him out. This is so he knows where to go when he needs the tiolet. When standing with him I find it useful to keep saying "go tiolet go tiolet" It may sound silly but later on it comes in handy if you are ever in a hurry or it is cold outside. He learns the comand and eventually will go to the loo on that comand! What ever you have heard anywhere else do not think that rubbing a puppies nose in his mess will make know he should not have done it! This method is nothing but barbaric!!!!

We feed Clay BETA puppy / junior food which can be bought at any good pet store. It needs to be soaked in water so it is soft. He feeds 4 time a day now and will be taking down to three and then eventually 2.

If you need any more help just let me know and I will do my best.

I'm sure everthing will be fine!

Michael.
