With reference to the thread that has been pulled (you all know which one ;) ), I thought I would check with the veterinary surgeon named as to a bitch having puppies before being spayed.

Admittedly, I just phoned up & asked "is it true that its best for my bitch to have puppies before she's spayed" - and the receptionist/nurse that I spoke to said "well, its up to you".    

I didn't enter into any other conversation, but I was surprised at that answer from what would appear, from the advertisement, to be a modern veterinary hospital :(   Unless, of course, the practice looks to making money on ceasarian sections :(

Interesting work there Sherlock Margot. :P Awful that a modern pratice can still say such blatantly irresponsible and incorrect  things. I know my vets would not. Also most vets I have been to display the Dogs Trust posters about neutering, saaing why it is a good idea, and how you can get it done for cheap if you are hard up.

Having said that, I once worked for a vet who was fond of telling clients with sick dogs that breeders DELIBERATELY breed unhealthy animals, as if the die early they get to sell more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The mind boggles!!!!!!

Oooh I wonder how many vets we could phone up and ask that question!!!! :D  Maybe also ask what should we have tested/looked at before breeding! :D

Maybe we should all phone our vets.......annoynously and see what theresponse is to the question on breeding?

Maybe we should each phone another's vet ....they might recognise voices??

My vets reccomend spaying on all cross breed bitches thus cutting down all the unwanted dogs in rescue,fair comment...but on a pedigree bitch i was told depends on the owner IE if the bitch is a good specimen all relevent health checks etc my vet is a dog breeder herself, but she did say she would advice any new puppy owner to have their girl spayed after her first season to rule out any mammory or cervical cancers later in life....

That's disgusting - we should all write them a letter.

Here's another one from a modern practice this year.  I was talking to a lady in this veternary who's bitch had fallen fowl of her resident male, apparantly she had had pups only 5 months previous, so she did not want her to have anymore as was worried that it was not fair on her bitch. (Obviously) I watched her go in with her dog and come out a little while later, I asked her how it had gone thinking she had had 'the injection' and she said she was going to think about things for a little while as the VET had said "Well if the bitch has come into season her body must be fit enough for another litter!!"  I know this is only hearsay as I was not there, but it beggars belief.  I know that the KC will register a litter 6 months after the first, but I personally do not approve of this and was absolutely shocked by what happened. I can't believe that a lot of vets are encouraging pups.

Conspiracy theory............. Is there an up and coming shortage of pedigree dogs that we don't know about??????

my vet was very nice on rubys first visit,she checked mouth, eyes ,eares & back end. then wen on to say they highly recomend spaying 3weeks after the first season to prevent unwanted litters,cancers & phontom pregnancys. more detailed than that but i dont know some of them lol :) .
she highly recommended socialization asap but not to be put down but carried places as the window for socialization begins to close at 12weeks,rubys nearly 4mths. she did say that ruby semed alittle nervous and that puppy partys might benefit her shes got her first party on the 7th december which im looking forward to, me than she is lol .
she got her last needle today and wormed so walkies in 2 weeks for ruby,weve already been practising in the house she isnt to keen but shele get used to it. :)

Phontom...is that a new breed??? Maybe fills the shortage we're expecting at Christmas!! LOL JUST KIDDING!!! :D :D :D
