Paul has just said that a scan on Friday proved inconclusive but that he hopes that she is as he has got his head round the idea of tiny paws, Has poor Olga though?

Heaven help us all!  Here we are, trying to get some sense into a numpty's brain about her staffies, and we have a "star" (not very brightly twinkling, imo) wittering on about the "patter of tiny paws".

I think I'll go & bash my head on the wall & then roll around on the golf course :(
- By eavie69 Date 21.11.05 17:22 UTC
Ignoring the huge risks to a puppy having a litter, I am sure that Paul has the funds to pay for a c section if she needs one, rear the pups and keep an entire litter if he choose to, unfortunatley will all the people watching and thinking we could do that, ours aren't pedigrees, no health tests but if Paul thinks that it is okay........?
Have his dealings with rescue taught him nothing?

It makes you wonder how much of what they would like us to see on telly with some of these 'down to earth, caring, never harm a soul' "celebs" is true, I think if he had have known even the very basics about any rescue in the country, he would not let this happen or continue.

I would like to see him on here.... sorry feeling rather devilish today!! :D

Don't forget, Margot, that when planning TV programmes, producers work on the assumption that the average viewer has the intelligence of an 11 year old :( Television presenters are not much different from their viewers ;) ;)

I watched today (first time I got chance as it is usually feeding time at the Zoo)  and I am shocked to the core as well.  I can understand why Olga wasnt speyed because when he got her she was only a few weeks old and most places like the bitch to have a season and can also understand why Buster wasnt done as he has another male and to be honest unless he was agressive there would be little point BUT as he had a female brought into the equation then I would have thought he would have been very careful to say the least.  He has animals on his farm so for gods sake he must know about the birds and the bees after all he does have a daughter.  ;(  I must say keep going on about is making him seem extremely stupid and as someone said although he will probably care for them well but it is hardly a good example and does not say much about the rescue centre involved.

Would anyone here, in particular those that did e-mail Paul O'Grady, be prepared to be actually quoted (with real names) on your views on this subject for Our Dogs? They're looking into this for a possible news feature. If so please PM me.
- By colette77 [gb] Date 24.11.05 21:25 UTC
I emailed Paul and offered him some advice and I would be willing to put my name forward, Colette Barber.
Let me know if you need any more information, think I have a draft of the email I sent him to.
stay safe, Colette.xx

Olga is the same age as my youngest german shepherd. He was 8 months old on the 17th of november

Patty - it's not a crime to own an entire male dog....is it ?
- By archer [gb] Date 22.11.05 14:53 UTC
I believe Buster is a rescue...and hence SHOULD be castrated as that is the policy of most rescue organisations

When we got our rescue from Battersea six years ago, it was their policy to spay females. They advised neutering of males and gave a voucher to reduce the cost, but didn't insist on it being done. I don't know if they have changed their policy since.

The problem now is would any of you really want to destroy potential puppies that are going to be born? I was very annoyed when I heard him say that Olga was pregnant but obviously it is too late now or the vet would have suggested aborting them. So, lets hope Paul does the right thing and has her spayed after the pups are born.
- By archer [gb] Date 22.11.05 16:03 UTC
It isn't to late to have the bitch speyed and the foetus' removed...and yes its what I would do for an 8 month old bitch

He has just announced its a Phantom.Hooray hurray
- By liberty Date 22.11.05 16:05 UTC
Although the idea of terminating her pregnancy is not pleasant, she may lose her own life should the whelp continue to full term.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 22.11.05 16:06 UTC
Are the rescue centres empty, then? If I'd been so careless as to allow a puppy to become pregnant with an unwanted litter in the first place I have her spayed as soon as possible. Better that than have them put to sleep at birth, surely?
- By Pedlee Date 22.11.05 16:42 UTC
I may be wrong, but isn't he doing an 'adopt a dog' spot on tonights show?! If so I think he is being a bit hypocritical.
- By newfiedreams Date 22.11.05 17:04 UTC
Hmnmm, he's saying it's a PHANTOM pregnancy now! Interesting huh???
- By thomas-the-spot [in] Date 22.11.05 17:37 UTC
Bitches pregnancies can also be terminated up to 45 days by injection not nice but it can be done.  I believe he is a catholic so probably wouldnt have gone down this route.  It sounds like he has realised how narked some people were as he just said she had him in enough trouble with the punters.  There is no way she could have been speyed before he had her as she was only about 8 weeks old  but I do think they could have at least insisted that Buster was snipped before allowing him to have her.  I bet if he had been a member of the general public they would have insisted on it.

I must say I am slightly sceptical on the fact it is now a phantom.  Perhaps some of the press have been on his case now and he doesnt think it quite so cute!
- By maggie [gb] Date 24.11.05 21:53 UTC
Paul said on his show, I think it was Wednesday, that it was a phantom pregnancy and that she is going to be spayed next week.

No Daisy, they haven't changed their policy. I took on an 8 mth old entire male back in February this year and was given a voucher towards the cost which expired in August and was advised to have him neutered but I haven't. And I won't, unless he gives me a reason for it.

Let's hope Paul has learnt from this close call.

???????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- By lofty [gb] Date 22.11.05 17:18 UTC
Thats what i thought ??
- By LeanneK [gb] Date 22.11.05 17:35 UTC
The audience has just shouted for him to take a rescue from todays show, he replied "No Ive already got 3, and Olgas got me in enough trouble with the punters"  So it seems all the emails did the trick.  I instantly thought that he may have terminated Olgas pregnancy just by the sheepish way he slipped in the fact it was a phantom, I think had this been true he would have made more of a deal of it.  Or am I just cynical.

Edited to say: I have an 11 month Yorkie that was castrated yesterday purely due to the fact I have recently rehomed an 11 week little cross breed girl.  The rescue I got her from said they would prefer it if Arthur was castrated and also gave me a voucher to have Lilly done when shes had her first season, which I will be doing.
- By michelled [gb] Date 22.11.05 17:37 UTC
all very suspisious,it will be interesting if the bitch dissapers from the show in around 8weeks
- By Isabel Date 22.11.05 17:38 UTC
Yes I felt he was very defensive in the way he spoke of it, avoiding "eye-contact" with the camera.
- By Broomie [in] Date 22.11.05 17:41 UTC
Hi Leanne
The exact same thing's going through my mind! I'd have expected more drama from him too!
- By Goldmali Date 22.11.05 17:43 UTC
Wow result!
- By michelled [gb] Date 22.11.05 17:48 UTC
IF hes telling the truth!!!!!!!
- By justlou Date 22.11.05 17:50 UTC
The vet has just said that Paul will be getting Olga spayed next week :-)
- By LeanneK [gb] Date 22.11.05 18:00 UTC
And he stressed how important it is to get pets spayed.  :-)  Emails DEFO worked.  At least he has put his wrong right, and I still like him as he does ALOT for rescue dogs.
- By Patty [gb] Date 25.11.05 09:49 UTC
Excellent news!!!! Hopefully this will help the public also become educated on the importance of neutering rescue and pet dogs. One only has to work at a rescue to centre to see all the suffering that is created by irresponsible owners and innocent 'mistakes'.

Well done to everyone for sending your emails on. At least one influential person has been educated.

All the best,
Patty
- By eavie69 Date 22.11.05 18:01 UTC
Well done Paul, for having the vet say that it was a bad idea for a dog as young as Olga to be having a litter, whether a phantom or not she is being spayed, the outcome that everyone was hoping for.
Don't criticise then be petty when they listen, accept the advice and try to educate the public.

Maybe its worth a few e mails to thank him for listening and to congratulate him on educating the public through his programme??

Either way I'm sure he has learnt something and lets face it, he doesn't want a bad reputation! :)
- By Goldmali Date 22.11.05 23:03 UTC
Great stuff. :) Our Dogs got a reply as well earlier today, this is what was said:

"At the present time Olga's 'pregnancy' is unconfirmed and unlikely as great care was taken to prevent this happening.  Paul would be upset to think that he has been encouraging people to allow their dogs to have 'unwanted puppies' and recommends that pet owners have their dogs spayed or neutered at an appropriate time."
- By CherylS Date 22.11.05 23:56 UTC
Maybe it would be nice for everyone who emailed to email again to show support for the prospective Spay :)

It would be one thing to hide a pregnant bitch but to hide a litter from snooping press would something else.  He would have to home them afterall so perhaps he is getting her spayed
- By Goldmali Date 23.11.05 00:07 UTC

>Maybe it would be nice for everyone who emailed to email again to show support for the prospective Spay :-)

I think that is an excellent idea. :)

Does anyone have his email address again

I heard him say last night that he had recieved loads of letters telling him he was iresponsible, he then said that he was'nt because the dogs had been seperated for 5 weeks, and that he did not want loads of puppies running around, quick change of mind i think in just a couple of days when he said he was getting his head round the idea of the patter of tiny paws. Lets hope he's learnt something from this.
- By sharonb [gb] Date 25.11.05 10:44 UTC
He did say the dogs were seperated while she was in season which he thought was over. I think he was more unaware and unknowing than irresponsible. He found himself in the same situation as alot of ordinary people.
1 thing IF the dog is pregnent Im sure shed have the best care and the pups get good homes.
