Topic Dog Boards / Health / why has puppies ear gone floppy?

i took my westie pup 4 2nd vaccinations on Wed atfernoon. When the vet gave injection he yelped really loudly with pain & cried for quite while afterwards. when got home he was really tired & went to sleep, he continued to sleep all aft but approx every 10-20 mins woke crying. i phoned vets worried about him who said he should not be having reaction to vaccine & if didn't settle to take him that evening. He seemed very drousy later in day & cried in pain when he moved or was picked up so returned to vet that evening.  when examined they found it was vaccination injection site causing him pain, this was another vet from same surgery who gave him pain killer jab using different site. This seemed to ease problem & by next morning he was usual mischevious self. i noticed at this point his ear looked slightly floppy but did not seem  to be causing him discomfort. Thurs evening i had to go into hospital with worries about pregnancy & he was looked after by my mum who noticed his ear looked more droopy but was not causing pain. When i arrived home this eveing his ear still floppy alot more than 1st day but he still doesn't mind it being touched or doesnt seem in any pain & running about like a mad dog with older westie. Do you think this has something to do with the injection which had obviously bruised his neck  or something seperate altogether. i am ringing vet tomorrow 4 advice & will be quite unhappy if related as had to pay for pain killer injection & routine check even though was vet that caused it. do u think that is right also?
Thank you

just wanted to say aswell that i dont mind in slightest if one ear stays floppy & 1 not ill love him either way just seems strange it has happened to just 1 ear straight after problem with injection site. i have only ever had one other dog who is also westie 14month old & have never had any problems with her ears. i am just worried it is health problem?

i realise i'm just postin answer to my own question but after search on this subject have read the ears can go up & down whilst still puppy. it just seemed a bit strange that it coincided with problem with injection site but if it is normal for ears to flop after both being pointed whilst still a pup i will stop worrying, like i said before i was just worried about it being health problem. im sorry if i sound a bit silly  but a question not asked is more silly i always think.

Hi Joanne,

Having a great conversation there with yourself - hope you don't mind if I join in :D   Young pups' ears often do strange things in the early stages so it's rarely a concern and then just as you think they've sorted themselves out, WHAM, they start teething all over again so the ears do all sorts of weird and wonderful stuff ;)

Check the inside and look for any dirt or redness and sniff them too in case he has either a scratch or infection going on in there.  Usually if they have any discomfort in their ears they shake their heads a lot, carry ear well off to the side or scratch at it.  If there is any smell then that means he'll need something done but if he's showing no signs of discomfort then I'm sure it's more likely to be his age and will sort itself out (before the next stage of helicopter ears with teething  )

>im sorry if i sound a bit silly  but a question not asked is more silly i always think

Absolutely right - it's only a stupid question if you already know the answer ;)  We all need to ask Qs or we don't keep open to learning.

HTH, regards Teri

Yep, to agree with Teri, one pup I bred was beautiful, then literally a fortnight before her first champ.show (and her only chance to qualify for Crufts!) down went one of her ears.  Cutting a long story short it turned out to be one tooth that hadn't quite come through yet and the ear is now up again -and she still qualified (albeit with the ear down!). :) Your pup is a lot younger so I'm sure the ears can be even more wilful.

Pup's ears can go up and down a great deal whilst they're teething, one day they can be flying and the next they hang like a hounds.  Try not to worry too much about it because its just as likely to be the teething process as a reaction to vacinations!

Hi, saw your message and I know this is not quite the same thing but I have a puppy who had a absolutely horrible  reaction to his second set of shots(ended up in emergancy hospital overnight on oxygen, almost lost him) Needless to say he has recieved no more injections!! Anyways something really weird happened right after. This puppy had always been very straight upfront almost to upright in his ankles(pasterns or whatever you call it) In one days time after the reaction he had dropped so far that he was walking on the back side of his front ankles. Vet had not explenation. But slowly over a 2 week period he raised back up and is completely normal now with no lasting affects. Maybe something similar is happening to your pup. Give him some time maybe he'll return to normal.

ear watching is my fav passtime with pups. i REALLY wanted flynn to have tipped ears. at 10weeks they were PERFECT.(for 2 days) then i took him out in the wind & they were never the same again!!!!!!!!! (of course it WASNT the wind but it DID seem a strange co-oincidence at the time!!!!)as it happenes he has ears the size of dumbo, but big ears are in his line so to be expected really!!!!!

LOL Michelle Rjj's ears are all over the place & when he is in Sheep mode they go up & when he's relaxed they are in the semi erect mode.

He's got all his teeth through but his back teeth are not fully through yet.

If you have a look at Roy's page on the dogs website in my profile you will see how his ears have gone from Fox Terrier to BC ;)
