i breed australian red cattles i have bred 3 different females over 25 years and this is the first time i have seen this in one of my dogs and i have researched and research before i started breeding and continued to research for new developments but i have never heard of this my only breeding female at the moment is pregnant and due on saturday on sunday her vulva swelled even more than the usual amount of swelling that remains after their heat i have contacted my vet but he has told me that this happens with some dogs and has told me not to bring her up because the vets upset her and this being her first litter she need not be upset so close to her whelping date she does have discharge but its clear mucus which i know is normal i want to know if anyone else has experienced this with a dog and if this is a problem that needs treating i trust my vet and he has never been wrong but i just dont feel right she was bred from my last female and the last females mother was the female i owned and bred before her i have used a different male for each dog over the years these dogs have all their medical checks and dont show any defects or adnormalities she isnt in pain or uncomfortable

her last vet check was on friday and everything came out all clear we do know that even though this is her first litter she will be expecting quite a few judge by her current size and by the bulging and movements in her stomach my vet does not perform xrays unless it is to check if there are more pups still in there after whelping because he believes it adds to stress to the dog and i do agree in my dogs cases

so if anyone has had this swelling problem with their dog could you let me know im not talking about the normal after heat swell im talking about how she swell even more on her 57th day

My sbt had this, her vulva and the whole area surrounding it was enormous. It stuck out a mile and I too was concerned but my vet said it was normal as it is a sort of cushion for the  birth.
- By slee [au] Date 14.11.05 10:51 UTC
yeah well its the first time i have seen it in any of the bitches i have bred this large any way i took a picture and showed the vet and he said it was normal but i definetly wanted to check with other breeders because i havent seen this before however as far as she goes her pregnancy even though she comes from the same bloodline as the other females id bred have not been the same at all she has gone from being a strong secure dog into a downright wimp she is now scared of everything and is more sookie then any of the previous dogs she weighs about 30 kg right now and she insists on sitting half on my lap usually a very obedient dog she will now no longer come when i tell her to if she doesnt want to sit and i tell her to she wont but i have always paid more attention to her than my other dogs so she knows she can get away with it she also insists that her whelping area will not be her box it will be my bed and i hope to god she changes her mind when she does whelp

ok i demanded that my vet see her this morning and he checked her out and said everything was fine no matter how many times i have bred the nerves and anxiousness never dissapear i think its because she cant tell me herself if she needs help and ofcourse because im watching her so much she will do things to let me think she is not ok she is phsyching me out

'no matter how many times i have bred'

Hi Slee

How many litters has she had?
- By kayc [in] Date 15.11.05 13:47 UTC
If you read her 1st post you will see that this is her 1st litter.  Slee has used 3 other females in her breeding plan over 25years ;)

okay she has refused to eat her food so far today and has been panting on and off between naps and has had a small dig in her box so its a little early but she is 59 days today so its ok ill keep you all up to date over today or tommorow i think it will probably happen between now and then
- By slee [au] Date 17.11.05 03:04 UTC
p.s she is also the first female i have had who has refused her food the bitches i bred before her would eat up until 2 hour before the first pupppy appeared even though those bitches where her mother and grand mother her pregnancy has not been similiar in anyway although they do have different father's so maybe thats why hers is not the same as theirs were
- By slee [au] Date 17.11.05 04:14 UTC
she is definetly in labour she picked her blanket up in her mouth earlier and carried onto my bed she seems to think she is having her babies on my bed i on the other hand have other ideas
- By RRfriend [se] Date 17.11.05 05:27 UTC
Why do they always? :-) I've had the water brake in my bed more than once. Then once they are settled in the whelpingbox, it's just fine. Good luck to you and your girl.
- By slee [au] Date 17.11.05 06:52 UTC
i think they just like to keep us  busy  at the moment there is just alot of panting and digging and throwing the blankets around and peeing quite alot so its moving along slowely i had my suspicions early this morning that she was in early labour but knew for sure this afternoon
- By slee [au] Date 17.11.05 19:06 UTC
so far 2 gorgous boys cant stay though she just had those two within five mins of each other so she isnt taken her time she wants out of this whole pregnancy gig and fast

my girl was due on sunday but decided to deliver early she is having a large litter that is prob why but all pups are very strong and very very LOUD all have been suckling as soon as they came out with no coaxing or placing on the teat from me so all looks good so far
- By purplenemus [gb] Date 17.11.05 20:40 UTC
Glad its all going well, and the pups are well. Think I still have a long wait as only a small litter this time I think.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 17.11.05 20:50 UTC
Keeping fingers crossed for a civilised day time delivery in the whelping box and not in that hole that she and her henchpuppies have been excavating. :D
- By purplenemus [gb] Date 17.11.05 21:08 UTC
I can always hope.

- By LucyD [gb] Date 18.11.05 13:27 UTC
Fantastic, great that she had them with no problems! :-)
- By slee [au] Date 28.11.05 07:46 UTC
pups are now 9 days old their eyes are starting to open and they are starting to get up on their shaky legs all the boys are the biggest and fattest and all the girls are tiny poor mum dog feels like a milk bar but she is handling herself and the puppies well we had a nervous day at the vets 5 days ago when she had severe diarrhea the night before turned out she had just stressed herself to much (my irresponsible neighbours have 2 female and 1 male moggy cats and both females went into season at the same time and all the undesexed tomcats from the neighbourhood were fighting next to my fence which upset her quite alot)
- By justlou Date 28.11.05 14:20 UTC
Fantastic news Slee :-) So pleased to hear that all 9 pups are doing well.
