Do any of the cat experienced people know if a pill syringe would work with cats? I've just failed - again! - to worm my two. They are the gentlest cats going but both are expert spitters and they don't fall for the pill hidden in food routine!

Have you tried the Panacur Favourites for cats?  They're available on www.vetmedic.com.  Dog ones certainly disappeared quickly on the occasion I was given a freebie, I wonder if they're as palatable for cats.

Would be interested to hear if anyone has tried them on their cats, as we currently get our vet to do it when she has her Program injection.

Yep, tried them. Our cats know better than to believe they are just treats and when refused they are impossible to give like ordinary pills. :(

I used to get the vet to give me injectable wormer for the cats but got fed up with him laughing at me. Now it takes me about 5 pills to get one down! :)

Ah well, we'll continue to pay the vet to be lacerated on a regular basis then - oh how she must love seeing an appointment for Smudge McLaughlin. :D

I have tried panacur favourites, one cat devours them the other turns her nose up!!

Have tried the pill syringe and it didn't work with mine, the only way we can worm ours is by my hubby wrapping her in a towel and me throwing it down her neck and holding on to the face to stop her spitting it out........we then run to avoid the wrath of the cat.:)

My vets now use the spot-on type of wormer. I hate it! I could give the cat tablets, but getting him to sit still long enough to put drops on his neck - FORGET IT!!!!!!! The vets no longer do the tablets :(
- By jas Date 17.11.05 17:58 UTC
I didn't know there was a spot-on wormer for cats. Now that I could cope with! :)

I don't think it deals with all worms though. I seem to remember they gave it to one of mine when they were kittens, it's a flea and wormer in one but isn't as effective as the tablets and doesn't kill every worm just the more serious ones (I could be wrong, it's been a while :D)

Have you asked about the panacure paste? You can get it in a syringe and its chicken flavour I think, you squirt the right amount into their mouth, you still need to get it at the back of the throat and they are not too keen on it... but they cant spit it out so you get the job done.

I think you have to do it for three days - but if you get shredded and stressed with pills it might be worth a try :)
- By jas Date 18.11.05 16:03 UTC
Thanks for that. Both my cats hunt, so they need a wide spectrum wormer. If I fail with the present lot of pills I'll try the panacur paste - thanks.

I am sure you've all seen this before somewhere, but I think it was written about my cat!!!

INSTRUCTIONS FOR GIVING YOUR CAT A PILL:
1. Pick cat up and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if
holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of
cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in
right hand. As cat opens mouth, pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close
mouth and swallow.
2. Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in
left arm and repeat process.
3. Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away.
4. Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm holding
rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back
of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of 10.
5. Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe.
Call spouse from garden.
6. Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, holding
front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to
hold cat's head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into
mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.
7. Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap.
Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep
shattered figurines from hearth and set to one side for gluing later.
8. Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with its
head just visible from below spouse's armpit. Put pill in end of
drinking straw, force cat's mouth open with pencil and blow down
drinking straw.
9. Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink glass
of water to take taste away. Apply band-aid to spouse's forearm and
remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.
10. Retrieve cat from neighbour's shed. Get another pill. Place cat
in cupboard and close door onto neck to leave head showing. Force mouth
open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with elastic band.
11. Fetch screwdriver from garage and put door back on hinges. Apply
cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus shot.
Throw T-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.
12. Ring fire brigade to retrieve cat from tree across the road.
Apologize to neighbour who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid
cat. Take last pill from foil wrap.
13. Tie cat's front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind
tightly to leg of dining table. Find heavy duty pruning gloves from
shed. Force cat's mouth open with small spanner. Push pill into mouth
followed by large piece of fillet steak. Hold head vertically and pour a
pint of water down throat to wash pill down.
14. Get spouse to drive you to emergency room; sit quietly while
doctor stitches fingers and forearm and removes pill remnants from right
eye. Stop by furniture shop on way home to order new table.
15. Arrange for RSPCA to collect cat and call local pet shop to see
if they have any hamsters.<

chocymolly, THAT is hilarious, and oh so true.
- By Goldmali Date 17.11.05 19:31 UTC
It does work but it isn't easy -and you have to be careful to avoid stabbing the cat inside the mouth with it (got to shove it down as far as possible as well or the cat will still spit it out) and not to get bitten. I have one cat that is VERY difficult to pill, he's a rescue, and its the only way I can do him. Def. needs 2 people though.
- By Lyssa [gb] Date 17.11.05 22:53 UTC
Yep, have to have two people, I hold my cat(s) on the table by the scruff of the neck so they can't escape, open their mouth, hubby shoves the syringe down their throat and squirts, I then close their mouth, hold for 10 seconds, stroke, good boy, and off they go, giving me a filthy look until tea time, then they are all over me again!!!
- By jas Date 18.11.05 16:02 UTC
Hi, thanks I'll give it a try. The Korat is ridiculously easy to handle and you can do anything with her. The tortie mog is a bit more temperamantal but still not bad. So the problem isn't getting the pill in, it's keeping it there. Both of them spit for Britain and are quite capable of walking away complete with pill and THEN spitting it out. :) I'm sure I'm not doing the job quite right as I've had dogs that can hold and spit but none of them has ever beaten me.
- By lofty [gb] Date 19.11.05 01:18 UTC
Once i get the pill in my cats mouth i close there mouth and rub there throat so they have to swallow
- By chocymolly [gb] Date 19.11.05 09:15 UTC
I do that too, but then i lose control over what their feet are doing!!!!
- By Bluebell [gb] Date 19.11.05 10:46 UTC
Easy answer is to pau about £5 for a vet nurse to do it :D One of mine is a monster to worm and OH is no help at all (cos he dosnet want to hurt him  ). When the cat gets to teh vets he just sits there and swallows like a good boy. I swear he does it on purpose to show me up.
