Hi Molly (5 1/2 month shih tzu) has a black thing growing all round one tooth at the front. Rang the vet in my usual panic and am taking her tomorrow evening. Does this sound like it could be an abscess. It looks like a black lump surrounding her tooth. Thought I would ask as I do tend to panic :o
Thanks Gina

Sorry, Gina, I can't imagine what this is, unless her gums are black. Good luck at the vets.

Thanks Lynn, will let you know after I have been this evening. Her gums are pink but lump is black. Perhaps pigment comes into it I am not sure but it isnt any bigger this morning.
Regards Gina

Have you ever felt a real berk :) The 'black lump' was a piece of fur or fluff stuck round her tooth :o
Oh well I laughed when we left the vets and I did get out of work half an hour early :D

Hiya - is this a red face = :o !!
It didnt cost anything luckily cos I saw the vet we saw last week when I thought she had a lump on her head and it was only a little scab which took him 10 seconds to pick off !!! (He, the vet, looks like Paddy the vet in Emmerdale with an Aussie accent).

Hi gina, well I am guilty of being silly too.!! A good few years ago, I bought my daughter two half persian kittens, and chose what i was told were two boys. After getting them home, and looking at them properly, I thought to myself...."Silly woman. these are two girls"
When I took them to the vet, to have their innoculations done, I explained to him what had happened. Trying to hide his laughter, he politely explained to me that cats willies are hidden, and do not show underneath like a male dog!!! Boy did I have a red face LOL

I hardly dare tell you this but I will, many years ago when I first started having males, oh dear this is so blush making. Well this dog was about 14 months old when I noticed whilst grooming him that he had two lumps - no not those lumps I'm not that daft - but two lumps at the base of his sheath. Now I did not know about these glands as men don't have them, but I did know that lumps could be serious so I took him to the vet and told him my dog had these two lumps yesterday but I could not find them today, having shown him where I had found them the poor man had to explain to me the dogs bits and pieces without laughing. Was my face red, bet I kept the surgery amused for weeks. Jackie H

I also asked on here a few months back whether at 6 months Barney had any bits to go with his thingy (trying to be polite here :) ) and that caused a few laughs too, and I realised in the end that they were about 3-4 inches away from his thingy and not with it. :o Not sure if all dogs are like this or just his breed .... :D. Gawd why am I talking about this I dont even bother to think about what poor old Molly has or hasnt got - must be a girl thing (oh no dont tell me it is me being a weirdo please :D :D)

Yes Barney will, they are there to help lock the dog to the bitch during mating and are called the bulbus glandis, so now you know you can forget it unless of course you are grooming and find two lumps..............................JH
