Hi all.
I am getting my second Boxer pup this friday. The lady I am buying him from has already told me he should be of show quality (Her stud dog - and mother was one of her litters - Mobox Boxers). My first Boxer is now 3yrs old and has been nothing but a loved, over spoiled (if there is such a thing) pet - no re-fraize - daughter. So I know little about showing.
I know dogs cannot be shown until they are 6 month old. So other than taking him to classes is there anything I should be doing before these classes start?

I'm sure the breeder (and friend) will give me all the help she can! But too much help is better than too little!

Many thanks.

Michael.

Hi Michael,

Finding a good ring craft is definitely the best way to start off (apart from being mentored by your breeder of course ;) ) as these classes will not only demonstrate how best to move and present your puppy but get him used to being handled gently all over in his little private places too  which is not always something new puppy owners do as a matter of course (helps heaps with future vet check-ups etc too).  Over and above that they are an excellent socialisation place for youngsters - IMO better than obedience training as much time is spent chatting to other handlers and meeting their future protégés in a very relaxed and social atmosphere.

In the meantime you could practice getting her to focus on a treat or toy while remaining in a standing position and running your free hand over her head, down her neck and back and then running it up her under carriage.  Then move onto having a family member gently doing this too while you keep her attention.  Don't over-do it though - you don't want to bore her!  And I'm sure you'll have more pressing training in the toileting department for the first couple of weeks :D

HTH, Teri
