Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / HELP!! Gsd puppy eating LOTS of stones
- By Guest [gb] Date 15.11.05 18:22 UTC
Our 12 week old male Gsd pup has started eating small pebble like stones that we have around the edge of our garden. He always has tried to chew  them but in the last three days he seems to be eating them with a vengeance!! In the morning his crate is littered with stones that have come out the other end!!
We are really concerned he may hurt himself. Apart from the obvious i.e removing the stones does anybody out there have any ideas how we can try and stop him please

Thanks

Don't allow him access to them!!!! They are dangerous and can kill.I knew a staff who ate stones...had 2 surgeries to remove stones from his gut and the 3rd time he died

My Tibetan Mastiff puppy was TERRIBLE for doing the same thing. God only knows where he used to pick them up from as my back yard is all concrete. He'd poo and he'd sound like a pair of castanets that many stones would come out - or he'd puke them back up in a horrible slimy pile. Please prevent him from doing it as much as humanly possible so he doesn't give himself a blockage.

The good news is he will probably grow out of it by the time he's around 8 month or so. My TM puppy did anyway.

Continue to be concerned, this is no good for your GSD.  As stated he will grow out of it, but in the mean time, you will have to put your garden second and your pups health and safety first.  Remove the decorative stones, either put paving stones, slabs, woodchip (though he will probably scoff this too, but not as dangerous) or grass down, until he is older.  Most of us with dogs have forsaken our beautiful gardens that once were.  I am afraid for now you will need to do the same. Or section off a piece of garden away from any dangers just for your pup.

Easier said than done sometimes, especially when, like me, you live next to a gravel quarry - we don't have soil, we have sand & gravel. Only way I've found to stop my stone-eater is to leave plenty of old bones around to divert her.

You MUST take steps to restrict his access to stones - as other's have said, remove them, or consider muzzling the pup when he's outside.  You should also be outside with him so you can distract him while he's out there.  I'm also concerned that he's being given the opportunity to poo in his crate - at 12 weeks he should be learning there is only one place to relieve himself, and that is outside.
