Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / HELP! My dogs won't eat anything

Can someone please help and give me a magic potion to make my dogs EAT?! Mungo won't eat more than a mouthful at a time and thinks i'm trying to poison him and Gracie just won't eat- except what she can steal from the other dogs.

what can I do? Have tried tripe, museli and kibble foods and now they are on canned with mixer but they still won't eat. Gracie looks alright as she was previously ok at eating and a bit chubby but Mugo is looking tight and ribby.:-( They are wormed regularly and have recentley been done, no other health probs, plenty of exercise, regular feeding times, limited time with food, what else can i do?

Any ideas?

Have you tried Naturediet.  Most dogs really love this. http://www.naturediet.net/index.html

Reduce their ration by half.

Serve two meals a day.

Leave food down for 15 mins, if not eaten by then remove and feed NOTHING until next meal.

No dog will starve itself to death.

We are talking about dogs who scavenge, lick their bums and eat animal droppings after all.

Hunger is wonderfully motivating.

IME the reason dogs and children do not eat can be found at the feet of the owners/parents.

Neuroses are extremely contagious.

Never had a fussy child or a dog in my life.

There are two choice in my house, eat or starve.  No one has selected the second option so far........... :D

Have to agree with you there Tohme!  I've had 3 rescue dogs who have tried this one.  The longest one of them lasted was 3 1/2 days (which did have me worried), but she now wolfs her food just like the rest of them.  I'm not quite as generous as you though, I give mine 10 mins to eat, then remove 'til next mealtime. :D

I have actually never needed 15 mins with any of my dogs, if it hits the floor then I know they are ill (I throw my food mostly as it is raw) :D

I inherited a cat once from someone who said it only ate fresh fish.

After 3 days of not eating, it sighed, rolled its eyes and tucked into its bowl of El Cheapo instant cat food with relish for the next 5 years! :D

My shihtzu went for 5 days without eating a scrap,"I" ended up giving in and adding some roast chicken.I sometimes wonder if she would have starved herself to death :( She came from a bad environment and i really think something bad happened to her to do with food/feeding.She's getting better now,but up until recently i was lucky if she ate every 2 or 3 days, and then only enough to kill the hunger and get by for another few days!I've only had her for around 6mths. and the thought of going through this crap for another 10 years or so really frightens me.

There is no magic potion,i have looked ;) Have you looked in Malted kelp tablets from Dorwest herbs, these apparantly stimulate the appetite.Enervite from PAH may also help.

How long have you let them go without food before giving in,do they know if they hold out long enough mummy will give them something tasty?

Roast chicken and broth seem to be winners.Do they have a fave treat? Grate it into a fine powder and mix in with their regular food.If you can get them to eat everyday for a week their tummies will get used to being full everyday and hopefully they will be looking for food.Dogs used to eating tiny amounts at intermittent times tend to get used to it :(

Have you tried Naturediet? Most dogs cant resist it. What canned and mixer are you feeding at the moment, perhaps it doesnt have enough meat or too many grains and stuff which is why they wont eat it.
