My girl had her litter 4 days ago now , All went well as it was her first litter but after the first day she started growling at them ( i thought they mite of been hurting her when feeding ) but last night her growling was a nasty one and i noticed none of the pups was feeding at the time then out of the blue she nipped one of them ive been keeping a close eye on her since but im getting worried as she still keeps growlin and i dont know why !
Can anyone help me out plz !!!!

Have you had her checked after the birth?  It might be just down to her not wanting to be a mother so you'd be better getting her checked out at your vets to make sure there's nothing wrong with her.  If she's still growling your going to have to bottle feed them yourself.

Warm regards Susan

I'm assuming the birth was natural and the vet's visited to check the pups and the mother to make sure there are no retained afterbirths, etc. Is mum also being taken into the garden to relieve herself several times a day? Is she drinking plenty, and what's her appetite like? Someone will have to stay with them 24/7 to make sure she doesn't hurt them, and the worst-case scenario is that the pups have to be kept separate from mum and only put with her to feed (with mum suitably restrained) every 2 or 3 hours day and night. In that case you'd also have to top-and-tail the pups.

I can't help wondering about eclampsia, this can happen after a litter and snapping and growling at the pups can be one of the first signs.  It may be best to get your bitch checked by your vet asap as eclampsia is a medical emergency ;)

Hasn't she even been out into the garden? I find for the first few days I have to put a collar and lead on the bitch and literally drag her (my breed's too big to carry easily) outside. Refusal to go simply isn't an option. As soon as she's performed I let her off to run back to her babies.

It's also vital that she drinks plenty of fluids - watery warm milk with glucose is good - and scrambled egg to eat. It could be that her blood sugar level has plummeted. It's quite normal to have to bring the bowl to the bitch, so don't worry on that score.

Some girls can be quite agitated and stressed after a delivery if their calcium levels are too low. Often the results of this are snarling and growling at the puppies and sometimes even attacking them. It is helpful to give a bitch tums with calcium after she has whelped her litter just in case there is a calcium deficiency when the milk comes in. It won't hurt her at all if there isn't and may prevent the loss of your puppies if she is. Good luck.

My Jasmine was like this after my vet 'thought' she had finished delivering....I thought there was still one more to come, but she said no......2 hours later she started contracting again, luckily we were at the vets at the time and with a lot of assistance her last, but sadly dead pup was born :-(  once this was delivered she was fine.  I would get your girl checked out by you vet, like others have said it could be a problem, or she might just be taking her time to settle down to motherhood.

Good luck!
