I moved house a few months ago and am currently working my way through the redecorating.  Any ideas how to get borders off the walls without damaging the paint underneath.  One in the bathroom came off in one go but the cloakroom downstairs has 2 borders in it and when I tried to take one of them off it tore.  will using a steamer get it off without too much mess and work? any other tips gratefully received.  thanks in advance.

I use a steamer every time i re decorate and there is little mess apart from what you have taken off.
I have just had a new heating system installed and im like you having to re do every room apart from two bedrooms grr.

Can't help but when I read the message title I thought you meant removing Border Terriers from walls...

Use a steamer but don't hold it on too long as if you do you will melt the paint, hold it on long enough to only absorb the border and gently peel..

You might find it easier if you use a "jug" type steamer rather than a typical decorating "pad" one.  You can be more specific as to which areas you target.

I bought mine for about £20 in the local DIY/hardware store and it's brilliant for all sorts of things and I now wouldn't be without it.

lol@ karen,
thanks for all the advice but impatience got the better of me and I started on another wall and just ripped - some paint from underneath came off too and some bits of wall that were underneath the paint too (lol) but what satisfaction I gained from systematically de-bordering my house.  I'l follow the tips for the rest of the house though coz it will save loads of money.  thanks again.

jackyjat I've got one of the jug steamers but its in a corner somewhere gathering dust coz I can never be bothered to use it - lazy and impatient thats me!
