Topic Dog Boards / General / Goose Attack Update

Hi to all those who read my previous post. Thanks for all replies. The photo was a good idea I passed that on to my sister and they took photos.
At the time of the attack the owners of the dog werent home. When they found out what had happened they said they were sorry but it was an animal thing.
We know its only instinct and that was not their argument they only wanted the dog under controll when in the shared drive. To what the owner said he wouldnt do anything at all to restrain his dog.
Anyway he is a prison officer his wife a police officer.
My brother in law told him if he wasnt going to meet him half way and at least try to keep controll of his dog if it did anything like that again he would shoot it. The owner just said do it and Il have you locked up.
Ive told him if an animal is on his land bothering his animals he as a right to shoot.
Anyway after taking legal advice they now know they have rights.
THe dog as actually chased my sisters cats into their own house and charged round the house after them. If the dog comes in her house again she is going to lock it in a room and phone the dog warden and explain whats been happening.
Oh not forgetting the goose left behined. It screached al night and throughout the next day my niece could hear its cries from her school which was really destressing. The goos as been rehomed to a friend with other geese. It was accepted by the other geese and from what I know is happy

So - what's happening Sharon?

It sounds like everyone has decided that "next time" something will be done...

But from what you've said, there is plenty to do something about already and you shouldn't wait.

Why wait until another animal is killed or injured?  Isn't that one too many?

I hope no one is intimidated just because these people are a prison officer and police officer - that doesn't make them above the law, and as you say, they are wrong in this case.

I would take legal action now and get them fined or something at least for having a dog out of control, plus a visit from the dog warden would go down well.

Well yes thats what I thought NEXT TIME. I have told my sister to take some kind of action. Even if its just a visit from the dog warden.
I will talk to her again today and ask if she is doing anything actively. I said to her what if you do nothing and it attacks a child walking by the house or tears apart an innocent pup on the lead.
The drive is open. It is very rare the dog is out but only once could be fatal.

Your very right in what you said. I ont know what i would do. sort of in same boat. I live in a block aand have 2 sets on neighbours each way.difficult to explain. i live in a masionette, theres 5 flats on bottom then 5 masionettes on top (i didnt know what they were tll i moved is so quickly there a flat with 2 levels, i have an upstairs and downstairsand someone lives underneath me) i live slap bang in the middle and the people on the end have a big german shepard. I have to walk past their dog as i have to come up stairs to get to my house. most of the time shes out,   and permantly in summer wth their door open. I have a 1 year old little boy and im terrified of her. On the back of our block there is land where people walk their dogs, she hates other dogs and constantly baks at all the other dogs she can see from the balony which is pretty much all day. It not just that, when my mum comes round to visit which isabout every 2 days and brings her dogs round she tries to attack them. She hasnt yet but she tries. Her owners always come running out everytime buits not good enough it only takes once when our guards down. And i wouldnt be suprised if she attack us if we got in her way. Its not only that. As i said to get access to mine i have to walk past theirs, they have put a big metal gate that they SOMETIMES, not always put accross to stop her walking balcony. Its a right of ay to all of us and i get really annoyed bcos they never put it back open if there dogs inside. Its really difficult to struggle with shopping and a 1 year old then have to open the gate to get though! As like you the owners are both prison guards and i feel like i cant say anything bcos i dont want to upset them.

This is just my opinion but I couldn't wait for a next time.  Surely they are on tenterhooks and stressed out waiting to see what the dog will do next.  Now the soft target geese have gone what will the dog turn to next.  You have already said he has bitten people, what if next time he bites the little girl or savages one of the cats.  I'm afraid that now your bro-in-law has threatened to shoot the dog that all neighbourly love has probably flown out of the window, so he may as well go all the way and put an end to it. The neighbours didn't like the threat of the dog being shot so I hope your bro-in-law made it clear that they are living with the threat of attacks from the dog all the time.

I think that the attack on the goose sounded horrific and that is what the family should act upon, the next attack might not do so much damage and not have so much affect on the authorities.

Your family sound like they might be intimidated by the dog owners somehow.  Whatever the history between them your family has the law on their side and they should really approach the authorities even if it is not to make a formal complaint but for something to be put in writing as a formal record of events.

I m still unsure as to whether the goose put its head through the fence to your neighbours land (i.e. dog was therefor on its own land) or whether dog came onto your land?

Personally i would inform the dog warden ASAP, it is AGAINST the law to have a dog dangerously out of control & this dog is ! I would also be billing them for a replacement goose ( not that money could replace sentimental loss or the last goose if you know what i mean )
I would also get a letter drawn up from a solicitor too just to make it officail & to let them know that you know your rights too :D

Yes SAm it is unsure. It does seem the goose may have put its head through. Thats the problem with this situation. But it doesnt change the whole list of things this dog as done. The main concern is the dog owners lack of cooperation.
