I have just got back with my OH (this is the last time  ) anyway he is a "new man" apparantly and he has treated me to a kitten for my birthday :D Well we picked kitten up last night, he is a lovely little chap, 12 weeks old and ginger and white - he was advertised as half exotic persian but his mum is half exotic persian so he is just a plain old moggy - but a very beautiful one.  I think we are going to call him Rupert, although Cuthbert was being considered too ;)  We got him as a friend for my other cat Deliliah as we lost her brother a few months ago - and she hates him :(  But the boys love him and he isnt really scared of them - but the lady where we got him did have rotties and labs !!

I am a bit concerned about what he is being fed on - felix in Jelly 4 times a day, and that is the adult variety.  Should he not be having kitten food ? I feed my other one dry burns and a little bit of that hi-life tinned stuff which she supplements with various creatures

He has also only been wormed using the sherleys stuff, and isnt due another dose until December, im thinking of getting some drontol and doing him anyway because I dont think the sherleys stuff is that great - any thoughts ?

He is lovely, but a bit shy at the moment.

Hi,
change him over to kitten food asap as just like pups they need the extra stuff contained in the kitten food. I think Felix do a kitten. The Hills kitten dry food is great too. (I don't have cats at all but just going from what people do at work with their felines!!) Also get some decent wormer from your vet soon too, either Panacur (wouldn't use it on dogs but cats are different!!) or I think you can use Millbemax from an early age. Good luck, watch out for those claws and teeth!!

well, you see ive never fed my pups on puppy food they are on mostly BARF so im not sure if kitten food would really make a difference.  He hasnt eaten a thing since I bought him home, he is too busy hiding :(  He is booked in at the vets for saturday morning.

Mine are on a version of BARF for cats. In their books this should consist entirely of roast chicken

Hi
Congratulations. :) Yes definitely change over to kitten food, and do NOT under any circumstances worm again using Sherleys! As I posted in another topic the other day, a cat of mine and several others I know of had a stroke after being wormed with Sherleys. :( It is also not effective to get rid of any worms -use Drontal cat.

Funnily enough a few years ago I had an accidental cross mating between an Exotic of mine and a rescued moggy and I kept one kitten that I called Rupert. :) Sadly lost him this year aged only 6 to PKD -you may want to have your kitten DNA tested for PKD as almost 50 % of all Persians and Exotics sadly are positive for it and your kitten will have as much of a risk as a purebred sadly and it will help greatly to know. The DNA test only became available this year which has made life a LOT easier, before cats had to be scanned and only 10 UK vets did it. Now all you need is a cheek swab and for your vet to send it off to Bristol. It can only be done for Persians, Exotics OR any cat with that ancestry. You'll find all info here:

Really like the name Rupert by the way!!!

thanks for the info, I will ask the vet about it when we go.

I love the name Rupert, I wanted to call my first Irish Setter it but the OH was having none of it, he wouldnt let me name the second one it either.  I think he has glad im finally using it on a cat (so he will never have to call it !) cos that means I cant use it on another dog :D :D

Hiya,

I've had a few kittens over the years and in my experience panacur paste is the best, it's direct to the back of the throat and it's done. The powder panacur is just as good but if you have a clever kitten, you might find they avoid it and then you can't be sure they have been wormed properly.

Not sure about the health risks of worming them again, best speak to your vet :)

I prefer to feed mine on kitten food until they are around 9 months, usually i use wet meat (whiskers) but last time i put my girls on james wellbeloved kitten and they loved it, i didn't have to deal with the 'swapping them over' problems when they were older and they are both really into their dried food as adults, no fuss at all.

Also, if your other cat is on dried it won't hurt for them all to be eating similar foods together where possible, so they get used to the routine and eating together.

When they were very young i liked to give them half dry/wet at teatime but to be honest, that's probably more my thoughts than their preference :D

I love cats... ive got 4 but i don't think ill be getting anymore! lol

i've got a cat called Rupert as well!! but the vets looked at us as if we were mad when he registered there!!  (other cats called, Reuben Penelope and Mimi):D mind you OH is a bit 'off the wall' when it comes to names. have you ever heard of calling a dog Johnathon? or Mavis?!! when i got my ridgeback pup he wanted to call her ........... ELIZABETH THE FIRST!! :o: :D :D :D and he was serious i said 'no way' and he could register her at the vets with a name like that ,and call it every time we were out with her! so he changed his mind and we called her Gracie. mind you when i told my mum, she said "oh no, not another silly name why do you let jamie name them?" i was confused until i realised that she thought i'd said Tracy!!:D (appologies to anyone with any pets with these names!) when i was pregnant with my second baby  he wanted to call it Valentine for a boy or Olympia for a girl. wells shes 6 months now and called Georgina!!

My BSH 'tippie' was on Felix adult wet food when I got her - as per her diet sheet - but Royal Canin kitten 34 dry food.     She is a very gorgeous specimen (Not that I'd I pander to a cat's ego????? ) although very fussy - she won't even look at Whiskas in any shape or form.

Not that many years ago, there weren't kitten feeds and a lot of cats were reared very well without them!

well ive picked him up some denes kitten wet food and some nutro kitten samples but he wont eat or drink a thing :(  I feel really sorry for him, he is just coming out of himself and exploring and he really wants to be friends with my other cat and all she does is hiss and spit at him with the occasioanl swear word thrown in for good measure
