Hi everyone
I have recently had my basset hound allergy test results and now i am looking for suggestions off anyone as to what to feed.
She seems to be allergic to everything. Beef, Lamb, Chicken, Turkey and Duck. Wheat, Soya,Barley, Rice, Potato, Corn (maize) and oats. Cows milk, Whole egg and White Fish. Obviously some things are worse than others. Duck oats and barley are only a very low score within the delayed reaction range.
As you can see not much scope here. Any help would be appreciated
Thanks Irene
You poor thing, and I wish I could think of something to help. As most people I have heard of that have dogs allergic to some food groups will tolerate duck.
How about rabbit ?
My Weims are fed on rabbit and they love it and it suits very well. I buy mine by the case from Prize Choice. They just woof it down, to try it you could buy some from Petsworld, its in the frozen department. If it works, then buy in bulk from the makers because it gets cheaper the more you order.
What are you feeding at the moment, because I have visions of a thin dog, and it must be awful to try and think what to feed him.

Prize choice frozen rabbit blocks contain chicken, I'm afraid :(
I know you can get a food that is capelin and tapioca, but I'm afraid I don't know enough about it to know if it contains anything that would be unsuitable for your dog.
Those allergies are going to rule out most complete commercial foods. You might need to consider feeding BARF as it is the only way you will be able to control everything your dog eats. If you do a search for 'BARF' or 'raw feeding' you'll find lots of info.
Sorry I can't offer any more help. I do hope you find something to suit your dog soon.
You are right, I forgot about them containing chicken, sorry about that. But they could try a local butcher if they live in the countryside, sometimes they have rabbits. Or if you go and see some game keepers ? Of course rabbit is not as easy to find now a days as it used to be. Do Tescos sell rabbit chunks they used too years ago but I am not sure if they do now.
Did you say vegies react to the dog ? Some dogs are fed just vegies and do fine on it.
Thanks for your reply. Up until now i have fed burgess lamb and rice, and no i don't have a skinny dog in fact she is always on a diet as puts weight on dead easy.

How does this affect your Basset and how old is she? A friend's Basset who got diarrhoea quite frequently cured this by not mixing meat and grain - she had plain wholemeal biscuit in the morning and just tripe at night!
Hi
Sophie is three now and looks quite healthy it was only because she was developing skin problems, diagnosed as malassezia, that we had the allergy tests done.

You can feed capelin and tapioca commercial food;the alternative is to feed a home made diet either raw or cooked; dogs do not have requirement for carbohydrates via domestic grain so you could feed tinned oily fish, pork, and fruit and veggies although if she does have malessezia you might need to consider the sugar content of the fruit/veg carefully in order not to exacerbate the condition.
Not feeding grains would be recommended with a dog that has this condition.
However if you DID feel the need to feed grains then quinoa may be an alternative.
Also you may find that although your dog has tested allergic to these proteins it may only be cooked meats that cause the problem and they may not be an issue with raw food. There is also venison, lots of farmed product in the UK now.
thanks for your suggestions. We are feeding capolin and tapioca at present along with home cooked pork and veg with raw fruit and veg as treats. Haven't tried venison as yet or raw meats. Whats quinoa? People tell me you shouldn't feed pork, can you tell me why.
Irene

You don't need to cook the pork or any meat The reason why in the past pork wasn't considered safe for human or animals was a health issue but that was before animal husbandry was covered by strict legistration & all meat produced in the UK should be safe. I would advise however to freeze all meat before feeding to kill any
neoporosis that might be present(cooking doesn't kill it BTW)

People tell you lots of things! :D
I have been feeding my dogs pork for years, never had a problem with it, as Moonmaiden says it is a relic of the past.
