Looking for a Whippet crossed with a Bedale terrier - please does anyone have any information about a breeder - will travel.

My father lost "Fred" last year, she was a tiny whippet shape with pointy ears.  Ran into someone recently with similar dog who said it was crossed with a bedale terrier.

Any help at all would be appreciated.

Never heard of a Bedale Terrier, is it possible you mean a Bedlington Terrier?  They are usually rough coated, grey/greyish, and whippet sized.

If this is what you mean, you could try Countryman's Weekly, Bedlington/Whippets are a popular lurcher type.

I was waiting to see if someone else thought that!

Ive got a bedlington whippet x.... if you want a lurcher, or this cross, because you think they make easy going quiet pets, have a rethink.

Beddie x whippets are lovely dogs, but, being bred from teh working version of each breed, NOT the show version, they are far harder work than most people think.

The bedlington is  a TRUE terrier, even the show bred beddies are, as nervous and quiet as they may look, they are still a dog willing to get stuck in at any opportunity.

Couple that with a lightning fast reactive dog like a working bred whippet and you have a very quick, very sharp, very feisty little dog, who although unlikely to start a scrap, is also highly unlikely to pass up the chance of a good scrap!

Show Bedlingtons arent willing to get stuck in at every opportunity, they are generally confident dogs, who although they wouldn't start a fight, if they feel the opponent is serious, will finish it ;)   My own won't even bother fighting back unless teeth are on their throats ;)    If you ever went to a Champshow and looked at the terrier benching you'd find they are far more laid back than other terrier breeds :)  work/show bred ones are also the same despite being good workers ;)
On the other hand, the only nervous, timid Bedlingtons I've met have actually been working bred :(  some of them have been so neurotic its pitiful :( :(

Personally I think, as with all breeds, it's down to socialisation and training ;) as pups most show bred dogs are given plenty of socialisation and training in all situations before they leave home, this way they take showing and other situations in their stride ;)  On the other hand, working bred ones seem to be bred and more or less left to themselves (the ones I've known :( ) being treated far more as 'stock' :( after all, it's hard work and time consuming socialising them properly ;)

Guest, If you decide to get a pup, try to see the pups with mum,  and try to buy a pup brought up in the home, not in an outhouse, that way you'll be more likely to get a pup who'll settle well ;)  If there are loads of dogs being kept and bred, or lots of litters, the pups will not have had the necessary attention, lurchers are sometimes 'farmed', just like other dogs :( :( :(
