Has anyone on here experienced a bitch bleeding during pregnancy ?
I noticed last night a bit of spotting on the mat and when i looked at my bitch underneath she had a bit of dark red blood around her vulva. She was mated on the 10th and 11th Oct which means she'll be 29 days in whelp. Incidently this is her 2nd pregnacy.

To me this would be a very worrying sign, best see the vet, but she may be loosing some of her litter.

I would get her to your vet and quickly, this happened to my girl last summer, she was put on AB's, when the bleeding stopped my vet stopped the AB's, 10 days later she aborted her litter, she delivered 5 mummified pups :-(  my vet now thinks if she had kept her on the medication things would have probably been ok.  She was scanned the day they stopped the AB's and all the pups were alive and well.

I had this happen to a bitch some years ago, at around 28 days after mating. I rushed her to the vet who said she had aborted her pups, but two weeks later she was very obviously still pregnant and went on to have 8 !!! Unfortunately we still lost 5 of those. The explanation was that she was having far too many pups to start with and they just couldn't find enough room to emplant in the bitches uterine horns.
That was her one and only litter, never again !

Thanks for all the replies to my problem! I took my bitch to vets as advised whereby he gave her a 5 day course of Amoxycillin, though he wasn't sure what the cause was and just told me to take her back if the bleeding continues.

Hi Sophie

Fingers crossed for your girl.  As well as the antibiotics did your Vet do a scan to be sure all was well with the puppies?

I had a similar thing happen with one of my girls earlier this year.  She was on day 42 when she started to bleed, rushed her to the Vets (out of hours), she was scanned & there was 1 dead puppy but the other 3 were still alive.  They kept her in on drips for 12 hours then let me bring her home as all then seemed fine & no infection could be found.  The next couple of days things got worse as she started to abort.

A week later there was still 2 puppies alive but they didn't look to have grown very much.  A week after that, another scan & no puppies left to be seen :(  My girl only actually bled for about 5 days & although she had aborted, nothing resembling a puppy was ever seen.  We assume that she must have reabsorbed the last 2 very late on.

I will be honest & say it was an awful time & not one I would wish on anyone to go through :(  It has made me very wary now & I currently have her daughter hopefully in whelp, will find out tomorrow & I'm trying my best not to worry too much or to use too much cotton wool in wrapping her up!!

Keeping everything crossed for you, please let us know how things work out for your girl.
