We have a boxer boy called Boysey, six months old and very lively.  The last 6-8 weeks he has suddenly started to suffer with diarrheoa quite badly, although initially everything was ok in that department.  He started with a severe bout of it which lasted several days, we took him to the vet who said it was probs a germ, gave him some anti biots and severely chastised me for giving him raw mince (despite that being what the breeder had given from weaning).

Anyway I stopped giving that and any other treats etc and stuck to the Burns holistic (complete, dry) which was suggested by the dog training lady (as he was very hyper when we got him - on Hills Science Diet) together with weetabix in the morning as also recommended by her to help bulk him out as he was very ribby, despite giving him more than the recommended amount of dried food for his size.  (She has 5 dogs of her own and seems to be able to get all the dogs at training to do anything she wants - so I saw no reason to doubt her recommendations).

According to what I have read on here, collitus (diarrheoa not associated with a bacterial infection) is quite a common problem with puppies and also boxers so what chance have we got?  Although some people seem to say you can improve the problem by a controlled diet and others use things like kaolin paediatric or the canine equivalent.  I also understand that rawhide bones can cause probs, also Boysey isn't too choosy what he picks up and eats in the garden or on the beach etc (mussels, snails etc).

The only thing is everyone seems to say something different ie some say definitely go for raised feeding bowls to prevent bloat and others the exact opposite.  I've read so much now on the subject of doggy poohs that I just don't know what to think or what to allow him in the way of treats/bones etc as he loves a good chew.  I have no objection to going back to the vet but again they all seem to have their own ideas - just like dr's when you take a child with a reoccurring problem - and I don't see keep paying them only to hear something different every time and be just as confused in the end.

Just wondered what experiences others have had with puppies as I am now driving myself nuts over it and getting loads of stick from Husband and Son - even though it was a 'family' decision to get Boysey.  But hey ho it's a woman's job to nurture and nurse!!!!

I'd be grateful for any suggestions.  PS he also has terrible smelly flatulence!!!!

You could be giving him too much of the food which will give him diarrheoa.
Also at 6 months old he doesn't need the addition of weetabix, this could also
be causing him problems.

Another food that you could try is Arden Grange, this is a hypoallergenic food
which should help if your pup has any allergies.
But it is important to note that chopping and changing his food also wont help him.
Food changes should be done slowly over 5-7 days, slowly changing over from the old
food to new, 25% new food 75% old, 50% new 50% old, 75% new 25% old, all new food.
Also add a teaspoon of natural live (bio) yoghurt with each meal during the change.
You need to give it at least 2-4 weeks on the new food to see if there is any improvement.

Some Boxers are a bit gangly and don't 'body up' until 2 years old. Alot can depend on his
pedigree lines as some are slower than others in development. So trying to increase the food
may not make any difference at all, the only thing you will notice is diarrheoa...

I would also advise that you go back to the vet and check Boysey out to make sure that the
antibiotics have worked and got rid of the bug. It could be that he still has it and hence why
he still has the diarrheoa.

Charcoal biscuits can help with the wind problem. Mine lot don't tend to have this problem.

Burns food will not bulk your dog up as it is to maintain quite lean dogs.  although i feed it to my staffy, my friend has a boxer pup and I would not recommend it for her.  Lamb is good for putting weight on.
