Can you fill us in on why the puppy might need a glucose drink Jaquie. Have I missed something?

They was all fine - but tonight I've just noticed one has taken a turn for the worse, she's very Lethargic and doesn't appear to be trying to feed from mum.  I've got Whelpi and have given her some - which will hopefully help her pick up a bit, however I've just want to be prepared in case glucose is needed.

Basicallly I'm a nervous wreck and am probably worrying over nothing!!

Might sound like a silly question, but do you have any beef/ox liver in your freezer? (not lambs)  If not, phone round friends and neighbours

Boil a 1/4inch of water in a metal pot, cut a chunk off the liver, DO NOT COOK.  just ast the blood is oozing out of the liver, (juice must still be bloody) scoop up the juice and use a syringe or pipette. feed 1ml to pup every 15 mins, then 1ml every hour for min 24hours then 2mls for 24 hours, plus any feed she can take from mum or by bottle.

This blood/juice will keep in the fridge for 24hours. Make sure it is warm before giving to pup.  If pup is cold stick her down your bra.

What dose the blood/juice do for the pup?I know the water will stop the pup from dehydrating, but the blood I have not heard of?I am not douthing you I am just curious to know.Do you just let the blood drip into the water or do you actually put thechunk into the water? It will be handy to know just in case I ever need to use it.

I was also wondering whether you put the liver into the boiling water or just let the juices drip into the water, would be good to know just in case.

Why Liver?  Liver is probably the best source of vitamin A.  Retinol  is only found in foods of animal origin and is plentiful in liver. Vitamin A helps boost the immune system.  This method has been found by many breeders to help overcome the possible loss of fading puppies.  There is a high mortality rate in the pups born with a Dam carrying the CHV Virus. Many breeder have found that puppys who are weak, and basically fading have actually rallied after using this 'juice'.  I am one of them.  There is no guarantee that it will work for every puppy, but what do you have to lose by trying....

the reason for the blood....simply because a day old puppy cannot take anything other than liquid, so you need to get as it runs into the water, before it gets a chance to congeal and solidify.

Daisy,
yes you do put the liver into the boiling water....just as you see the blood running out of the liver into the water, suck it up with a pipette....
If you just let the blood drip into the water, it would congeal instantly, hence placing the chunks of liver and allowing the blood to run..

Hope that made sense :)
