Topic Dog Boards / General / Dogs never cease to amaze me

This is just an observation really.  Dogs never cease to amaze me.  I have ordered two Dogmatics to walk my two Springer/Beagle crosses but while I am waiting for them to arrive I thought I would get a Halti just so that I had a comparisome.

One of my dogs (Brandy) is very lively, noisy, boisterous and can be dominant so I was expecting her to be the one to resist the Halti.  I got her used to it a bit first then as she seemed OK I attached the lead and walked her round the garden.  She was so good that I then took her out for a walk.  We walked for about half an hour without a single problem.  She didn't try to get it off, just walked along as though she had been wearing one all her life, I was amazed.

I took her home and done the same thing with my other dog Sherry.  Sherry is a gentle, quiet, calm and docile dog compared to her sister.  I did not in my wildest dreams think she would create a fuss about wearing one. I got her used to it and she seemed fine in the house so I attached the lead and she immediately threw a major fit trying to get it off.  I distracted her with some tasty treats and proceeded to walk her round the garden but she went wild throwing herself on the grass and trying to rub it off.  Again I distracted her and she was OK but as soon as I tried to get her to walk she put her foot on the lead, growled at me and gave me a look that could kill.  I took it off lol.

I'm so shocked though, who would have thought that the exact opposite happens from what you expect.  I can see that If I want to walk Sherry on the Dogmatic that it's gonna be a slow process of getting her used to it in the house, letting her eat and play with it on before I even attempt to attach a lead :(

Hi Ilovemutts,

Your right animals always suprise you - I have two cats and when I got Ciara my dobermann 5 months ago, I was convinced my Siamese would take to her and my Burmese would be evil with her, well to say either of them have taken to her would be a stretch but my Siamese was far worse with her than my Burmese.  She has come round to her more now than my Burmese though.

With regards to the head collars it took me two weeks of putting the halti on to give her a treat or her dinner and gradually extending the time a little bit each time before I could think of walking her in it and even then she through several hissy fits, but we got there in the end.

Best of luck with the dogmatics.

Karen
