I feed my dogs raw meaty bones such as chicken wings, carcases, thighs and drumsticks from 7 weeks of age.

How often do you give chicken wings ?? They should all be raw, right ?? Is there any preference to what sort of bones i should be giving him ??

Are you planning to just add a chicken wing as a "treat" of will they form part of the diet?

A chicken wing may be a complete meal for some breeds of dogs at this age.

If you want a recreational bone, for him just to gnaw then you would be looking at say a beef marrow bone, but beware, marrow is very nutritious but also tends to have a somewhat laxative effect and therefore I would ration access to it on a daily basis........

It will only be as a "treat" he is fed on complete food, and to be honet up until i got him i've always been told never give chicken bones to my previous dogs. Since finding this site i've read it's ok to feed chicken bones as long as they are raw, i've also read they can be frozen when given to a dog does this not make the bones as brittle as they would be if cooked ??

The only silly question is the one that is not asked.

If you are concerned, bash the wing up with say a rolling pin or whatever.

Freezing does not change the molecular structure of the bone as cooking does and is not a problem however I would suggest that you feed a puppy one that is NOT frozen to begin with anyway.  There is no advantage in being frozen apart from using as an ice lolly in the summer! :D

Thanks for your help. I'm just off to buy him some chicken wings :D . As they will only be fed as "treats" should i only give him them once a week, every couple of days or daily ??

Hmm I should start off slowly and give him one a day to see how he copes.............

Thanks for your help ;) We went and got some chicken wings, although i did ask the lady in Tescos if they were Albertros wings, because they are so big :D I will give him one when he wakes up and see what he thinks of it :D

:( Dont think i'll be feeding him chicken wings again. He swallowed it whole, choked and threw up every where :(

Thats is quite a normal reaction for 1st timers :)  When I 1st gave my lot chicken wings, Emma always swallowed whole, regurgitated and then chewed.  It became so common that Tia stood and waited at Emmas mouth and literally took the chicken from her on the way back up.  Bit like a bird feeding its young :D

Try smaller younger chicken wings from butcher.

My rescue boy was a gulper so I held the wing in a pair of pliers at first :-)

Poor thing was probably so thrilled to get it!  He may be a bit more cautious next time and chew it more or you could try hanging onto the edge of the wing while he chews so he can't swallow it whole.

He will soon learn to chew bones properly,if given regularly they wont be such a novel thing and he wont feel the need to gulp. My dogs swallowed whole at first and then brought them back up only to chew them properly the second time round ;)

I gave my young pup (9 1/2 weeks old) a chicken wing for the first time yesterday. I held the end so he couldn't swallow it whole and after a few moments he realised what he was supposed to be doing and happily spent the next 5 minutes eating it :) Several dogs do try and swallow it whole then regurgitate it. As people have said, if you are worried then you can always break the bones up a bit before you give it to them :)
