Hi,

This might sound like a stupid question but.. Our Bitch had her pups last weekend she had a awful time, we lost one pup at birth, then four days later we had to PTS our beautiful baby girl pup Pink,  that we was going to keep, I know I am a bit paranoid now but I see the bitch clean both  of the boys and they urinate, but I have never seen them pass a stool, I know I cant watch them all the time, but after each feed she cleans them and so on...

Do they pass a stool each time they are fed and cleaned ?

I would be very grateful for any info I have looked in all the books and on the net, but got nowhere

Kerry (staggan)

BTW we are keeping both of the boys now :)

Hi staggan,

I too was worried about my litter as I never actually seen any stools.
I did see mum stimulate them to urinate but I never seen them poo.
When I rang my vet he said if all pups are feeding well, sleeping well and generally settled we had nothing to worry about,as mum was probably just cleaning it up quickly.
Mine are all off to their new homes next weekend some on friday, some on saturday and the last 2 on sunday and I am dreading it.
If your pups seem unsettled at all I'd take them to vet just to be on the safe side.
Good luck.

As long as the pups are settled then she's just doing a really good job :)

Don't worry, as soon as they start weaning and pooing for themselves you'll see enough of it :)  My bitch used to get covered as they'd be climbing over her and pooing   and no way was she cleaning that up :)  I had to wipe her with wet wipes :)

Don't worry, for the first two weeks your bitch will basically eat the pups stools which is why you can not see them, when she licks the pups it will stimulate them to urinate and she will also clean this up. All part of being a mum. (Glad I'm not a dog!)

Thanks everyone :)

I wont worry now, as I said ive seen them urinate after her cleaning them but not poo !
She is a very clean dog anyway so im thankful she is a good mum :)

I know its instinct but it all amazes me that she knows what to do :)
I cant wait for them to open their eyes now every day is so exciting they seem to grow and change before your eyes

I too, like you staggan was amazed at the way mum knew exactly what to do,we were blessed with naturals!
Make sure you take pics daily so you can keep a visual record of their growth, they grow that fast it seems like before you know it they're 7 weeks old and driving you mad (wouldn't have it any other way though.)
When I look back at pictures I can't remember them ever being so small!!!!!!

Yipppeeee ive seen them poop :) hehe how sad does that sound !

Ive been taking pics and you are right waffy, its like watching them change every minute! they are ten days old today and we weighed them one was 1lb at birth and the other was 14oz now they both weigh the same 3lb 1oz WOW...... their eyes look ready to open we can see slight glimmers when they are held and they are nearly up on all fours!!

every day brings something new to wonder at :)
