Who gets the pick of the litter? Is it the breeder or the stud owner? Followed by first come first served?

If you've paid a stud fee, then the stud owner has no pick.   Owner/breeder has first pick, then in my opinion, it would be first person who has reserved gets next pick, and so on!

Its normally the stud dog owner if theres been no exchange of money for the stud fee.

It depends on what's been agreed in advance. The usual system is for the bitch owner to pay a stud fee at the time of mating and keep control of the whole litter. Pick of litter (or any other puppy) is usually only offered to the stud owner if a cash stud fee hasn't been paid.

Depends on your agreement with the stud owner. You're usually far better off paying a stud fee than giving the stud owner pick of the litter -what if there is only one pup, or only one of the sex you want to keep, or the stud owner wants the same one you have set your heart on......... As for the rest of the buyers, I personally do not do first come first served as such, I'd rather try to match the pups to the owners whenever possible, so that each gets the one most suited to them. Some may need a more laid back dog, some may want a show dog, some may want one for obedience etc, and it isn't always a case of the one they like the look of most being the most suitable.

Anyone who the breeder say's can.  They could give pick of litter to the family down the road if they want! :)

We twice got pick of litter from two different breeders.  They wanted to breed to improve the breed and they both had waiting lists although didn't have the space for another dog.  Because we are looking for show dogs that would be shown well aswell as loved we were given pick.

In one litter we were offerd pick of dog's if interested!

Non of them did we have anything to do with the mating :)

edit: also I think most breeders give priority to show people on the possible show puppies as it's nice to see your breeding in the ring.

On the basis that we know our pups better than anyone just meeting them briefly, we assess pick of litter, 2nd pick and so on, decided which if any we consider have show potential, and match up to people on waiting list  by who we feel will be best suited to the individual puppy.  Very few, if anyone at all, that I know now do the "pick of litter for a stud fee" type thing.  IF we use an outside stud dog, somethime the dog's owner requests to be able to buy a pup if one is available.  With litters bred in partnership it is stipulated at the time of mating which partner gets which pick.
