I have read a post on here that states that staffys should only grow up to 16", My staffy will  3 in december and he is standing at 19", he is KC registered.  he looks every inch a staffy. should I be worried (hes a pet, I have no intentions of breeding him) I am just curious. thanks

Are yu measuring to his shoulder or the o the top of his head, as dogs are measured to the withers (top of shoulder blade).  If he is 19 inches at the shoulder then he is oversised but probably still a Staffy though not as typical as he could be.

hi

thanks for replying, I am measuring to his withers, He also has champions in his KC Ch. Black Tusker and a few more cant remember their names. I dont want to show him or anything he is just my baby. and perfect in everyway in my eyes.

Are you putting somethign flat across his shoulders and measuring to that or are you running a dressmakers tape from the ground around up to his shoulders, as that way would add a couple of inches.

yes, I use a measuring pole I use to measure my horses.  The funny thing is I thought he was a small, but he does live with a greyhound and a lurcher, lol

You'd be amazed how many people think their dofg is too takk because they measured the dog including the curves :D

Hi Sheli, you might like to have a look at the Kennel Club breed standard for Staffordshire Bull Terriers, this is the blueprint for describing an ideal SBT.

Of course, we all love our dogs more than anything in the word, and it's only right and reasonable that we think they are perfect in every way. However, that is not to say that they all conform to the breed standard on every single point. It's also worth saying that every dog ever born has faults of some kind, none of them are perfect, not even Crufts best in show winners.

There is a well worn saying in the world of show dogs, ''whatever happens, you always take the best dog home''

The standard is only a guide line and many show dogs are over the height and weight. As long as balance is retained, along with harmony it is o.k.

nemasis, breed standards are the blueprint of each breed.  The 'perfect' dog!  Anything above and below the standard height is considered a fault, to be considered as part of the whole, which is why at the end of each breed standard it says
"Faults
Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree"

I notice that you say 'many show dogs are over the height and weight' and not 'winning dogs'.  Any one can enter their pet of suspect quality in a dog show and call it a show dog.;)
