Topic Dog Boards / Health / Green lipped mussel extract

Hi all,  Could anyone who has used green lipped mussel extract which benefitted their dogs please tell me what dose they gave and how long it took to take effect?  Thanks.

I bought a human one and gave 1 capsule out of the recommended 5 or 6 a day suggested for humans, if I remember rightly, I think it took effect fairly quickly.  It was 4 or 5 years ago but I doubt I would have bothered to persevere if it wasn't fairly effective quite quickly, you know what a cynic I am ;)

My mum gives her 9year old Labrador these tablets, the vet recommended them to her, she gets the ones from Holland & Barrett and Honey has one a day, but she ups the dose to 2 tablets if she thinks she needs it.

Thanks Isabel and Sandra.  Isabel, you probably won't remember now, but Sandra if you and any other people replying could give me actual dosage per tablet/capsule, eg 500ml, I would be grateful as these seem to come in lots of different strengths, so if you say one tablet/capsule it isn't clear to me how much the dog is actually getting.  Sorry to be picky and thanks for your help.  :-)

I have just asked mum and the tablets she gives are 500mg, I don't know if they come in different strengths. She also said she opens up the capsule and sprinkles the powder on Honey's dinner rather than give her the capsule as she just spits it out.

Thanks very much Sandra.

Excuse my ignorance, but what's it for?!
- By Annie ns Date 05.11.05 18:45 UTC
It's for arthritis Bunty.

It is really good........ I have my old boy on it.
He was on Synoquin but I have found this is much better. He is 10 years old and still giving the younger ones a run for their money and swimming at least once a week :)
He has one capsule mostly. but I do up it to two when the weather gets really cold.

Hope that helps,
Gabrielle

Hi Gabrielle,  What dosage is your capsule - is it 500mg or less than that?
- By Gabrielle Date 06.11.05 12:41 UTC
Hi Annie,
It is a 500mg capsule and I do up it to 2 capsules if it gets really cold (1000mgs).
I checked with my vet first and she also now gives it to her own dogs, which is good enough for me !!!!!! :)
Hope that helps,
Gabrielle x

Thanks Gabrielle.  Where do you buy yours from?  I usually get everything from Healthspan but I think their capsules are 350mg.  I got Oscar some 500mg tablets from Holland & Barrett to start him off but I think capsules are probably better.

Hi - I give this to my lab with ocd, the results have been fab!!  started off giving him 500mg (holland and barratt), but after 4 months reduced to 350mg (healthspan), and he's doing just as well with the lower dose.  I read a study that said for a lab (ish) sized dog 500mg per day was best to start with, and you could adjust from there, and decrease the dose as the syptoms became under control.

That's very encouraging Clare, thanks.  How long was it after you started that you noticed an improvement?
- By DextersLab [gb] Date 08.11.05 13:19 UTC
I genuinely thought he improved after a couple of days, but how much of that was wishful thinking, I can't be sure.  However, certainly after a couple of weeks he was like a different dog, he hasn't limped since and really enjoys running around like a lunatic on walks in the woods - I thought he was just easy-going before, but now realise he was probable uncomfortable!  Hope it can help your dog too!!
