Hi
I must admit I prefer male dogs and especially in Goldens. I've had both sexes over many years and have always preferred the temperament of the dogs over the bitches. Golden isn't a breed that will usually really go nuts if there is an in season bitch nearby. Many breeders will have several males together without any problems. Obviously if you had your OWN bitch in season as well as a dog you will get the not eating, the howling etc for a while, especially in a young dog (they tend to settle as they grow older) but in all my years of having had Goldens (25 years) I have never had a male that has noticed in season bitches away from my own house.
Whether they wander off during walks or not is all due to your training, and it has nothing to do with the sex. If you start recall training as soon as you get the puppy you need never have any problem at all.
The choice of sex of a dog is usually a personal one and everyone will have different opinions (and of course it can vary between breeds!), but personally I would always recommend a dog over a bitch in Goldens as a pet.
